With the end of Thanksgiving break comes a flood of Christmas music, lights and theme parties. It’s almost impossible to not get swept up in the winterland wave of cheer, that is, unless your dorm room is lacking in the coziness and cheeriness you’re used to over the holidays. You can’t commit yourself fully to the holiday season unless the environment you’re living in reflects your jolly attitude, which, unfortunately, becomes somewhat of a challenge when you’re living in the confines of a dorm room. Fear not, we have some simple and easy solutions to making your dorm room look like a Christmas catalog in no time.
1. Set up a Christmas tree
It doesn’t have to be six-feet tall or completely covered in ornaments, but setting up a miniature Christmas a tree in your room will lift your spirits immediately (not to mention it will add some warm and cozy lighting if you string it with fairy lights). If you face the problem of having a lack of space, even for a mini Christmas tree, try something out-of-the-box, like this tree tapestry with ornaments!
2. Pillows, pillows, pillows
The one-step trick an instantly cozier futon is pillows, of course! Invest in some fur and Christmas-themed pillows to spice up your space, and make your futon look a lot more inviting for lounging.
3. Get lit
Literally! Try stringing lights along your ceiling, over your door, around your bed… pretty much anywhere. Warm lighting makes all the difference in a small space. You can even provide a Christmas-y view for your neighbors and hang up lights in your window.
4. Buy more blankets
There is nothing cozier than curling up in the biggest, softest blanket you own. Preferably plush, preferably fuzzy and preferably longer than 6 feet.
5. Curb appeal
Or hall appeal, whatever works. Either way, your door is the first impression everyone that strolls by gets of your room, so spice it up! Hang stockings, a wreath, even some fairy lights on your door for a more inviting feel.
6. Set up a hot cocoa bar
If you have the space, set up a mini hot chocolate station for you and your friends to indulge in after a long day of classes. Set out some holiday mugs, a jar of marshmallows, cocoa powder and peppermint chips. And, of course, string some fairy lights around, and you’ve made yourself the cutest holiday “bar” in the hall.
7. Make a Christmas collage
There are tons of cute printables online that can be easily framed and and “hung by the heater with care” as a gallery wall! It’s a quick and easy way to showcase your holiday cheer without spending too much money before the giving season.
Happy holiday decorating, collegiettes!
