With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, what better way to celebrate this holiday than to reminisce about all the horrible dates, hookups or Netflix and chills you’ve ever had? Even better, you’re not alone! Here are some of my favorite stories I’ve been told about dating do’s and don’ts throughout my college career. After hearing some of these I think I’m going to swear off dating for a while… Who am I kidding? The awkward stories make the best memories! So sit down, relax, grab a glass of wine, and enjoy/cringe through some of these awkward dates.

The Friend Zone

“So after like every social ended, I would text this guy, and we would hang until like two in the morning. This year he asks me to come over, and I think maybe something will happen. I go over for his birthday. He pours me wine, and we watch kids movies. After awhile he says he is going to bed and asks me to leave… I totally got friend zoned.”

Sister, Sister

“I had been texting and Snapping this guy for a week, and he seemed really into me. When we got back from break, he wanted to hang out. I went to his place and watched Netflix movies with him. As we were in the middle of making out, he proceeded to tell me about all the girls in my sorority he’s hooked up with…we’re tongue sisters now.”

The Crazy Ex

“It was my sophomore year of high school, and I was talking to this guy. He asked me to hang out and get ice cream after the home football game. We got to his car, and there was his crazy ex-girlfriend standing by his car completely drunk. She began to shove him; he tried to calm her down. He opened the door for me, and I got in. He tells me to lock the door. After he finally got in the ca, we drove away in silence. Needless to say we got ice cream through the drive through. He apologized for her later, but it was the most awkward first date ever.”

Prom?…Or Nah

“I was talking to this guy for about a month when we finally went on a date. I was a sophomore, and he was a junior. He told me he was going to ask me to prom, which I was totally pumped about. The next day this guy wrote on my car “Prom?” I had to tell him that I couldn’t. That night I find out that the guy I did go on a date with asked another girl to prom.”

Waterfall

“I hooked up with this guy during my first year of college, and we had just been friends ever since. He recently asked me to hang out again, which I was totally down for after a night of going out. I went to his place and was in the middle of making out with him when his drunk roommate began to pee off the side of his bed. It was a total vibe killer.”

Crash and Burn

“My senior year I decided to go with my best guy friend to prom. I was at prom pictures, and I hadn’t heard much from him all day. We started to take pictures, and he wasn’t there. I for sure thought I was getting stood up. He ended up missing pictures because he followed someone into a gated community (where the pictures were taken) and the gate closed on his car and shattered his windshield. He had to go home and get a new car before prom; needless to say it was a breezy night.”

Team Edward or Jacob

“So it was the night before the Iowa vs. Iowa State game. I was at my friend’s house party, and there was a cute guy. We were making eyes at each other and ended up getting a drink together. At the end of the night we decided to go on an adventure across Iowa State’s campus. We started making out on the middle of campus. He found a tree and wanted to climb it and do some Twilight shit (he eventually convinced me). We made out in the tree, then we walked home. His phone died, and he ended up leaving me at McDonalds to walk home by myself. We are now friends, but it was a very adventurous night.”

“You Have Reached a Wrong Number”

“It was the Big 10 championship, and I decided to pregame the pregame. I then went to Airliner and stayed at Eden until bar close. When we finally left, my friend had a guy she was going home with. I had met this other guy and was heading back to his apartment with him. Halfway to his apartment, I realized I didn’t want to go with him. I was walking home by myself when this guy then pulled up next to me along Burlington and asked me if I wanted a ride. The next thing I know we were at an elementary school, parked, and hooking up. He began to tweak out. We ended up at his apartment hooking up. My phone was dead, which was a horrible idea. I fell asleep making out with him. He drove me back at five in the morning, when I was adamant I couldn’t stay the night. He preceded to constantly text me after this night. I then faked an AT&T message to make him stop. We haven’t talked since, thank God.

Currently I am a sophomore at the Universtiy of Iowa majoring in Elementary Education. I love writing, especially about how wonderful our campus is!
