Festive Treats to Make This Halloween

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Iowa chapter.

Halloween is finally here. So whether you are planning to throw a party, get together with friends or just have a night in, snacks are a great go-to! I have put together a list with recipes for three festive Halloween snacks to make on the spookiest holiday of the year.

1. Spooky Spider Eggs

These cute appetizers put a festive spin on deviled eggs.

To make these you will need:

  • 6 whole eggs
  • ÂĽ cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tsp white vinegar
  • 1 tsp yellow mustard
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • Black pepper (to taste)
  • 12 black olives

Directions:

  1. Place eggs in a single layer in a pot, completely submerged in water. Heat on high until water begins to boil, then heat to low and cook for 1 minute. Remove from heat and leave the pot covered for 15 minutes, then rinse the eggs under cold water.
  2. Crack and peel eggs. Cut the eggs in half lengthwise and remove the yolks. Place yolks in a separate bowl.
  3. Mash the yolks using a fork. Add in mayonnaise, vinegar, mustard, salt, and pepper.
  4. Evenly spread the yolk mixture into the egg whites
  5. Cut the black olives in half. Set aside 12 of these halves. With the other 12, cut them into thin strips. The uncut halves will be the spider bodies and the strips will be the legs.
  6. Assemble the olives on top of the eggs in the shape of a spider.

2. Strawberry Ghosts

Chocolate dipped strawberries are always a sweet treat! Usually when making dipped strawberries you worry about the chocolate dripping off the ends. Fortunately, that is exactly what we are going for to make the tails of the strawberry ghosts.

To make these you will need:

  • 1 (16 oz) package of white chocolate
  • 24 fresh strawberries
  • Bag of mini chocolate chips
  • Wax paper
  • Metal tray

Directions:

  1. Melt the white chocolate in a bowl.
  2. Place wax paper onto a tray.
  3. Dip the strawberries in the melted chocolate. When you place them onto the tray, slide the strawberry backwards to form the tail of the ghost.
  4. Before the chocolate dries, place two chocolate chips on the strawberry as the eyes. For the mouth, cut off the tip of one chocolate chip and place it face down on the strawberry.

3. Tangerine Pumpkins

This is a healthy option for those of you that are not happy with the focus on candy and sugar on Halloween.

To make these you will need:

  • Tangerines
  • Celery stalks and leaves

Directions:

  1. Peel the tangerines carefully and try to scrape off as much of the white membranes as possible
  2. Wash, dry, and slice celery
  3. Cut 1-2 inch narrow pieces from the tops of the celery and insert these pieces into the center of the peeled tangerines
  4. Cut leaves from the celery tops and arrange it to look like pumpkin leaves

Happy Halloween!
