With spring break literally next week, (wow this semester is flying by!) many people are trying to achieve a natural glow to avoid looking pale on the beach. I completely understand the whole need to look tan; I love looking tan just like the next person, and you will usually find me looking very dark in the middle of summer from working outside and being outdoors most of my day. But a major concern for many dermatologists and doctors is the rush to jump in a tanning bed to avoid looking pale for spring break, formal or any function that you may have in the near future. I’ve done the tanning bed thing before and loved it. It actually becomes addicting, but with much research and many headlines being brought to my attention of the harmful effects of tanning, I have sought other ways to achieve the desirable glow on any budget.
1. SPRAY TAN!
Okay I’ll be honest with you; I wasn’t a big fan of my first spray tan. I honestly did not feel like I got that dark at all. You have to try out many different places until you find the one that suits you. Many different salons do spray tans differently, from using a machine to having someone spray you by hand (my personal favorite). I recently had a spray tan done for my sorority’s date party and loved it. I felt that I achieved a healthy glow rather than the nightmare of looking like an Oompa Loompa. Once I showered I felt that I had a nice even tan that did not draw too much attention but rather complimented by my light pink dress. (Pictured below). Usually you can find a reasonable spray tan for around $15 dollars that should last you around 5 days or so, depending on how dark you get and how often you shower.
2. TANNING MOUSSE
There are many tanning mousses that work very well. It takes trial and error to find the one that works best for you and your skin tone. There is one available at Sephora that has many great reviews, called Vita Libreata. It comes with a mitt to rub it on with to create an even tan that lasts longer. It is available for $54 without shipping.

3. LOVING TAN
I recently just had this product suggested to me, and I’m so excited to try it out and let you know how it works. I’ve been told that it works amazingly, that I’ll love it and it looks just like a natural tan. It’s another tanning mousse that is available at lovingtan.com. There are many different types depending on what shade you want to be so make sure to check them out. The mousse comes in three different shades of medium, dark and ultra dark. I am purchasing the ultra dark one and will blog about it in my future blog post, so make sure to check it out at midwestbeachbumblog.wordpress. The mousse is $39.95, and there is a mitt that can be purchased for $14.95.

4. DRUG STORE TANNERS
Drug store self tanners are a little more difficult to judge how well they work and which one is best for you, but they can usually be found at a much cheaper price. I have used Jergen’s Natural Glow Daily Moisturizer before, and it worked pretty well. Many of these products are not meant to darken you many shades but rather enhance a glow you already have. My suggestion is to use one of these along with a mousse that I have suggested from above to get an ultra dark look. You can purchase Jergen’s for around $6.

Overall there are many options to achieving a natural glow without jumping in a tanning bed. If you choose to use a tanning bed make sure that you are wearing the right skin protection and that if you get burnt, you take a few days off to let your skin heal. Everyone wants to look tan, but make sure that you go about it safely. Hopefully these tips can help you achieve that healthy beautiful glow that you want for your vacation. Have fun, and be safe!Â
