For Halloween, I try to avoid dressing up as something “basic” like a cat or a sexy nurse. While there is nothing wrong with that, I try to be unique and creative when it comes to Halloween costumes. Over the last year I have gotten into the YouTube channel Glam&Gore and her channel has inspired me to try incorporating special effects makeup into my costume this year.
Choosing the Look
Many of the looks on Mykie’s YouTube channel are elaborate and admittedly too complex for an amateur like myself to pull off. After scrolling through many of her videos, I eventually found one that was both doable and to my liking: her 2017 IT Pennywise Glam tutorial.
Modifying the Look
As a full-time college student, I didn’t have a lot of money to spend on this makeup look, so I decided to modify the look to make it as easy and affordable as possible while mostly using products I already own. I opted to not use contact lenses and fake teeth. I also chose to just use my lightest foundation color to wash out my complexion a little instead of using a white base.
Applying the Makeup
This is definitely one of the looks that looks far easier than it actually is. I started with the black eyeshadow. It was difficult to blend, but doable for this look. The red lines were what got me the most. If I got the lines even, then the two sides were not symmetrical. If the two sides of my face were symmetrical, then the lines were not even. Not to mention that red is difficult to clean up when you make a mistake. Once I settled with a look – even though I knew it was far from perfect- I layered red glitter on, used eyelash glue to adhere silver sequins by the corners of the eyes, and finished with mascara and eyeliner.
Even though this look seems quite easy, it is actually more difficult than it looks. However with a little practice or some extra time, anyone can make this work and pull this off for Halloween.
