The James Charles X MORPHE Palette- Is It Worth the Hype?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Iowa chapter.

I think we can all admit that the James Charles x Morphe palette broke the internet with its record sales. Once the palette and its array of colors were revealed for the world to see, we all had our wallets out and ready for the palette to officially go on sale. It has sold out worldwide, leaving many sisters out there ready for a restock. If you still are not sure if the Morphe x James Charles palette is for you, you have come to the right place.

If you haven’t already, check out James’ palette reveal video. He goes more in-depth about the palette and all of the shades.

What’s With the Hype?

The James Charles x Morphe palette has 39 eyeshadows ranging from neutrals to colorful shadows and pigments. This palette has something for everyone so that anyone can unleash their inner artist. This is unique considering most palettes are usually neutral, colorful or they follow one particular color scheme. I like to have everything in one palette, so I can create a variety of looks without dipping into half of my eyeshadow palette collection. If that’s not up your ally, then I would look into something else. When it comes to the price of the palette, the 39 shades for $39 is a steal. In comparison, high-end eyeshadow palettes typically retail $40 or more for only about 12 shades. How does the quality of the James Charles x Morphe palette compare to high-end brands?

My Experience

I have not put down the palette since it arrived and I have created many looks so far. I have dipped into many of the shades, and this is the conclusion I have reached:

The formulas, eyeshadows and pressed pigments in the palette are beautiful. Just like James suggests, it is better to use an eyeshadow primer instead of just using concealer, especially when using pressed pigments. To create the look above, I used the shades Skip, Love That, Sister and Pinkety Drinkety. I was pleasantly surprised by how well Skip, the neon pink shade, blended since it is a pressed pigment.

I wanted to try more pressed pigment shades, so I decided to create this look using all pressed pigments including Single, Escape and Artistry. Purples are very difficult to create, so I was expecting for this look to go downhill quickly. While these shades took some extra time and blending, I was impressed with the final result.

I loved putting my own spin on one of James’ recreation of his followers’ makeup looks. This is a look I love to do on a daily basis because it is easy and versatile. I love changing up the inner corner using anything from yellow to blue to pink to a white highlight. The formula for the neutrals is amazing. The larger-pan shades are pigmented, buildable and blendable. They are essentials for anyone that is into makeup.

Is it Worth the Hype?

Absolutely! It is a one of a kind palette that you are not going to find anywhere else, especially for the price. The performance of this palette compares to high-end makeup brands, so you can’t beat the quality for the $39. If you are looking to play with color or want a palette with a little bit of everything, this palette is for you!

You can find this palette at Morphe and Ulta for $39.
