Keeping up With America’s Favorite Talent Shows

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Iowa chapter.

We all love shows that involve a little competition, especially when it’s singing or dancing; so we can laugh at all of the ridiculous people who try out, of course. Shows involving dancing, singing, or both are, as we all know, extremely popular.

Out of all of these kinds of shows on TV, The Voice, The X Factor, and American Idol, are the most popular. All of these shows have started to change it up a little bit to keep people interested. So let’s take a closer look at each of these shows and see what makes them different, and what kind of changes they’ve had.

The Voice:

About the show: For those of you who have never watched it, The Voice is a show where four judges sit facing the audience and are only able to listen to the person trying out’s voice. If they like what they hear, they can push a button and their chair will turn around, revealing who the person is. The person auditioning then gets to select which “team” he or she wants to be on; team Blake Shelton, Christina Aguilara, Cee lo Green, or Adam Levine.

Changes: This spring, for season 4, Christina and Cee lo Green will be leaving to focus on their careers, but don’t worry they’ll be back for season 5. Usher and Shakira will replace them while they’re gone. The show is on Monday and Tuesday nights at 7pm.

About the show: Simon Cowell started The X Factor in the UK, where it was extremely popular, so naturally he decided to bring it over to the US. However, during its first season, which aired in the fall of last year (2011), the show wasn’t as successful as he had hoped it would be. The judges were Simon, LA Reid, a music mogul who was the executive of Island Def Jam Music group, which has signed celebrities like Rihanna and Justin Bieber, Nicole Scherzinger from the Pussycat Dolls, and Paula Abdul.

Changes: Since the show wasn’t a success, Simon decided to switch it up and brought two new judges to the show, Demi Lovato and Britney Spears. The show, which started just this past month, has already been way more successful than last season, and is on Wednesday and Thursday nights at 7pm on FOX.

American Idol:

About the show: If you haven’t seen American Idol, then chances are you’ve been hiding under a rock for the past decade. American Idol was also started by Simon, in 2001, and has been a sensation ever since. The original judges were Simon, Paula Abdul, and Randy Jackson, and of those 3 only Randy Jackson remains today.

Changes: Idol has been switching up judges almost every season for the past 4 years now. They’ve had comedian Ellen Degeneres, songwritier Kara Dioguardi, and singers Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez- Steven and JLo have been judges for the past two seasons and fans loved them. Next season, however, they will be gone, and their replacements will be Kieth Urban, Nicki Minaj, and Mariah Carey. Rumors have already started about a “feud” between the two new Idol ladies, but we’ll have to wait to see for ourselves when the new season begins this coming January.
