What To Expect At Your First Rocky Horror Picture Show

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Iowa chapter.

Getting ready for Halloween would not be complete without a live showing of the Rocky Horror Picture show. The Englert and Comics in Action are presenting this show to all the Iowa City people out there who want to put on costumes, show off some props, scream, dance, and laugh their heart out with all of their friends. This show is different from other performances you have seen. It is very interactive and as the movie plays, you get a live performance in front of the screen. You get to take part in the experience, too. As soon as you purchase a ticket, you choose the part of the time warp that you want to be a part of… LET’S DO THE TIME WARP AGAIN!!!

So, You Want To Wear A Costume!

At this event, any costumes are welcome! However, if you want to get in on the action, make it happen! There are so many characters from the show to choose from. The more popular characters include: Frank N. Furter, Magenta, Riff Raff, Columbia, Janet Wiess, Brad Majors, and Rocky. If you are looking to dress like someone more unique start with Dr. Scott, Eddie, or simply a Transylvanian! Maybe, costumes aren’t really your thing. That is okay, too. We are all just here for some fun.

To add to the ANTICI…PATION, come prepared for callbacks.

There are lots of opportunities to participate throughout the shows. It is okay to not know when all of these moments are. Start by simply watching the movie before you come. This way you will know what exciting lines are coming up and join in with the crowd. Even if you don’t know all of the callbacks by just watching the movie, don’t worry. Going to see Rocky Horror again and again is the best way to learn it for sure.

Props Make Perfect!

Watching the movie beforehand not only helps with callbacks, but it also helps to prepare you for when you’ll be using which props. Usually you will not need to bring your own props to the show. Englert has specifically provided props for you. So use them!

My First Experience

I went into the Rocky Horror Picture Show thinking that I would have to know all of these things to make the experience special. In reality, it is really informal. Knowing what cues to do the callbacks and when to use the props is easy. There is no stress to be had over little things like that. The people around you will help you if you aren’t so sure about when to do what. Once you start hearing the callbacks, you will catch on to when those times are. They do come up fast. Even though you can rely on the people around you, I would still highly recommend watching the movie at least once before you go. That way, you know what events are coming up and you can ANTICI…PATE the actions.

If you decide to bring friends who may not be as familiar, try to show them how to do the Time Warp. This is one of the most fun audience participation moments and you do not want them to miss out. Again, if you don’t have an opportunity to do that, the people around you will help and the song spells the moves out for everyone too… IT’S JUST A JUMP TO YOUR LEFT.. AND A STEP TO THE RIGHT.  You know the rest!

Going to the Rocky Horror Picture Show is a unique opportunity to have some light-hearted fun. You shouldn’t take anything too seriously, including yourself. My advice to you is to just have fun with it. If you’re worried people will judge you for dressing up, dancing, or yelling out the callbacks..DON’T. This is a safe space for you to just be who you are. Just go for it. Wear the craziest costume. Don’t be afraid to dress up as a more scandalous character (this is to all the Rocky and Janet characters out there). Most importantly, just have fun and enjoy the show!
