When I was in high school, there was a teacher who was infamous for telling students to dress nicely during finals, but for us finals week was a time where everyone came dressed in oversized hoodies and leggings. Her reasoning was if you look good you feel good, and I never really understood that until I came to the University of Iowa.
The very first time I visited campus, I was confused and intimidated by the amount of fashionable students I saw. I had been under the assumption that all college kids wore sweats to class. Now, as a student, I do see people in sweats going to class, but the majority of people are dressed stylish and professional. I can attest to the fact that there is nothing better than rolling out of bed five minutes before class starts and basically wearing your pajamas to class, but there is something to be said about dressing nice, too.
I decided to talk to some fashionable women on campus and see what they had to say about dressing nice and putting in a little extra effort everyday.Â
“I feel more confident in myself when I dress nicer than sweatpants and a messy bun. Granted, I am not dressing overly fancy or putting in too much effort or attempting to wear jeans. Sometimes it is nice to go back to the basics and the lazy looks out of comfort, and I do that quite often, but I find myself more confident and ready for the day if I put on some makeup and dress up my yoga pants” – Kathryn Ruff, Freshman majoring in Elementary Education
“I always feel that when I dress up instead of just wearing sweats, I have my life more together, and I’m a lot less likely to fall asleep or drift off in class. You can definitely be comfy and cute at the same time, and you’ll feel so much more productive, too!” – Lizzie Daly, Freshmen studying Public Health
We all have those days where nothing seems better than throwing on a spirit jersey and slippers, and it’s perfectly okay to have those days. But the next time you’re feeling down in the dumps, or extra tired and frumpy, try throwing on a cute blouse instead of that spirit jersey, or replace those moccasin slippers with a cute pair of boots. Just remember, Cinderella is proof that the right pair of shoes can change your life!
