Avoid Orono Turning Into ‘Borono’

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Maine chapter.

So school just started and while I don’t have island fever yet, it really sets in once I’ve made a concrete routine of work, class, library or whatever yours might be. Three years here have taught me that in order to not burn out, I need to “break free” from the routine as much as possible and enjoy what this place really does have to offer.

Monday
Curva actually has a pretty awesome buffet for about $5 and then super cheap drinks. It makes worrying about Mondays a little less terrible.

Tuesday

There is the Orono farmers market at the steam plant lot from 2-5:30. The best part is the fresh eggs but they sell out before 3. This one is pretty small but its still got plenty of fresh produce, bread and cheese. Everyone is super friendly and this one ends October 2.
Spotlight cinemas has $5 movies tonight and the dollar store is right next door, so you can stock up on candy for cheap.
Last Tuesday I went out to Ipanema in Bangor. It’s this Caribbean bar &grill that is delicious. They have great, affordable drinks like volcano bowls and about a hundred different types of beer. The best part though is the food, mango chicken quesadillas with fresh mango pico de gallo. They are huge and cheap and so delicious. Ask for Chelsea, she will take great care of you.

Wednesday
This one is easy. Kickin Flicks in the Collins Center for the Arts at 8pm. This week it’s the new Pirates of the Caribbean. Its totally free and they offer free fresh popped popcorn and the cozy seats of the CCA. But before you go veg out and watch a movie you can get stuffed full of BOGO 1/2 off  entrees at Margaritas with your student ID.
This is always a great girls night, especially when the CCA plays a movie you missed in theatres and have been dying to see. I’m really hoping they do Bridesmaids soon.  I love that Wednesday has so much to offer because hump day can be hard and Thursday never seems to come soon enough.

Thursday

So, this one is up for debate. Obviously you are going to want to go out and celebrate Thirsty Thursday, but where? You basically have the Brew, the Roost, Curva, and Kingmans (formerly the Dime).  Kingmans now has a free shuttle bus from the parking lot behind The Roost and The Brew, its called “The Rage Bus.” It will pick you up and bring you back to the center of Orono after the night is over. It has a limousine license so you can pack your whole crew in and do basically whatever you want. It makes a trip every half an hour starting at 10pm. So if you get bored of waiting in line at the Brew you can just turn around and hop on the bus.

Friday
Well, depending on how you spent your Thursday night, Friday might be a different story. But if you missed the movie on Wednesday, it is playing again in the Bangor Room. It might also be a nice date night out in Bangor, try out Fiddleheads or if you like sushi, Yoshi and maybe go to The Sea Dog, sit out on the water and enjoy the microbrews.

Saturday
You may or may not be up at 8am this morning, but if you are, the Steam Plant lot is definitely the place to be. They have a huge farmers market from 8-1 and there is everything you can imagine there. Fresh cows milk, goat milk, cheese, produce, plants, and cheeses. Its almost a little overwhelming but you will always leave with great stocks.

There are things to do everyday, like check out the classes offered everyday at the Rec Center. You can even take weekend trips to Boston or Acadia, day trips if you want and this semester there are a lot of great shows in the area. Ticketmaster, face book and twitter can get you through any slump and keep you entertained. There are always updates about new deals and fun things to do.
