Introducing our Campus Celebrity of the week, Her Campus’s very own, Katie Donlon of Katie Donlon Photography. Katie is being admired for her awesome photography skills and strong ambition. Take a closer look at how Katie does what she loves to do everyday.
What got you on the “photography path”?
“Ive always been a fan of the club photographers in Boston, it makes it much easier to go out at night and not bring your own camera. I also have always loved taking pictures and what could be better than getting paid for doing what you love to do.”
Where was your first job?
“I first started working as a photographer in fall 2011 at the Bear Brew, then moved over to Curva in February 2012. I worked on weekends shooting pictures of bar goers.”
Have you ever run into trouble shooting pictures of bar goers?
“Yes actually after some pictures were posted online I would get emails from people asking to take down pictures of them doing “naughty things.”
What is it like working out at the bars when your friends are there?
“I would say that at times it get frustrating but when Curva hosts big events its amazing having my friends around for support… and a few goofy pictures.”
What other types of photography have you done?
“I started with the clubs in Orono and have also done some shooting for various sports teams at the university. I also did a t-shirt fashion shoot for the small company called Fresh Filth.”
What Kind of Camera do you work with?
“I have a Cannon T2I right now, time for an upgrade!”
What’s your favorite thing about being a photographer?
“I love capturing the moment for people and love working with photo shoots, which I want to do more with. I have done a few shoots with friends and would love to get more experience. Finding new locations is also one of my favorite things about doing shoots.”
What location was your favorite?
“Believe it or not I did a shoot with one of my friends in one of the old dorms on the outside of campus, the great big old windows were a beautiful background. I also love working with different lighting, which was fun in the old building.”
What makes your photos unique?
“I think that I can capture the scene of the atmosphere really well when I shoot. When I’m shooting in the club I like to include the crazy lights and get fun action shots. I think that when I’m shooting for a fashion shoot I can also portray a nice calm image, so I think my style is very versatile.”
What is your dream photography job?
“I would LOVE to shoot for any top fashion magazine, especially Vogue!”
Any future plans for you photography?
“I’m in the process of designing around 8 different t-shirt styles that have edgy and classy feel. Something simplistic enough to throw under a blazer and wear out. I plan on shooting a look book for my designs and sharing my ideas. Once I get my designs out there with my photography skills we will see how it goes. So stay tuned!”
