This weeks Campus Celebrity is the UMaine Student Women’s Association (SWA). The student organization is a feminist group open to all women working to build a community among the UMaine population. SWA works to improve the climate on campus for all women by raising awareness and offering services. They have many programs and causes ranging from rape awareness to yoga classes to The Vagina Monologues, one of their most popular events.
The Vagina Monologues is an award-winning play based on interviews with more than 200 women about sexuality and strength. The play has given a voice to experiences and feelings not previously exposed in the public in hopes to provide empowerment to women every where to take control of their bodies and lives.
Tickets will be on sale this Monday, February 18th to Friday, February 22nd at the SWA table in the Union. Tickets will also be available at the door, but the event is known to sell-out quick!
There will be two show dates:
Thursday February 21 – 7:30 pm in Neville 101
Friday February 22 – 7:30 pm in Neville 101
Tickets are $6 for student and $8 for non-students.
All proceeds from the performance will go to:
- Rape Response Services
- Spruce Run
- Mabel Wadsworth Women’s Health Ceneter
