For the Health of It!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Maine chapter.

Tip 1: Spice up your life!

Cinnamon is easy to add to food you already eat regularly and makes everything taste better without the calories…and no, cinnamon buns, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, and cinnamon swirl raison bread don’t count. Cinnamon is great for people with type 2 diabetes as it can help lower blood sugar, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels. It also can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease thanks to the antioxidants polyphenols and can increase alertness because of its energizing scent.

Tip 2: Sex it up!
A good romp can blast up to 200 calories, equal to running 15 minutes on a treadmill. Sex has also been linked to reducing PMS symptoms, sharpening your sense of smell, and can help you fight colds! Forget getting dirty; “get down & healthy!”

Tip 3: Hit the gym & not the snooze button!
An early morning workout is a lot easier to fit into your crazy schedule, which means you are a lot more likely to stick to your fitness routine than if you worked out at night. Working out late in the night can cause insomnia, which is troublesome for people trying to lose weight.

Tip 4: Put out the cancer sticks… for real.
“The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that women smokers puff an average of 14.5 years of their lives away” (Women’s Health Magazine). Smoking is the most preventable cause of death in the U.S., and yet more than 14,000 women die every year from smoking related causes. Most women our age use some sort of birth control and smoking while taking contraceptives puts you at a high risk for serious health consequences including cardiovascular disease…the number 1 killer of women in the U.S.

Tip 5: Shiver those pounds off!
A positive to the frigid, artic – like temperatures of Maine? Weight-loss! People can actually burn up to 50% more calories by exposing themselves to below – freezing temperatures because your body is working overtime. Your body wants to maintain it’s normal 98.6 degrees and when you make it cold, your body will do everything it can to bring your temperature back to that homeostasis. In order to do this, it has to bur calories and heat equals calories. Blast double the calories this winter by hitting the slopes at Sugarloaf! It is easily below zero almost everyday there, and combining that with a great workout makes you a calorie – blasting machine.
