How to sign up for classes that are fun and meet a requirement!

It is that time of year again. Time to bust out your wish lists and get a hold of that pin number in order to get your schedule together for next semester. With heavy requirements and the stress of getting into required classes, it is always nice to add a fun elective into the mix. Plus you’re going to need the credits. With so many classes to choose from it tough to choose an elective you will enjoy and one that will not get in the way of your major required courses as well. There are many classes offered here at UMaine that you might enjoy more than you think! Check out the class catalog on the university website to get descriptions of all offered classes.  Check out the UMaine Class Catalog here!

If you enjoy dancing and theatre there are numerous classes available such as Beginner Modern Dance I, DAN 101 and jazz, tap, and ballet. If you’re interested in theatre there are courses like THE 111- Introduction to theatre, THE- 117 Fundamentals of acting and also THE 118- Stage Make up. These classes offer more hands on and interpretive learning rather than a lecture. However, these classes do still include work!

If you’re looking for a lecture class to add to your electives list try out The Art of Listening to Music. Even though this may not be talking about modern day music, you learn a lot about classic music and where our favorite tunes of today come from. The syllabus is simple and wont get in the way of a rigorous schedule.

There are also many other music classes offered, just search MUS under the catalog search. Also try searching AVS-153 Animals and the Law, this is also a lecture class. This is another simple syllabus class that satisfies the general education requirement for ethics and western cultural tradition. I have heard from former students that AVS classes are good electives to take because of the generous take home tests and fun material you can learn from it.

Covering your Art general education requirement is fun and can give you a boost into the higher level art courses.  Starting out with ART-110 2D design and working your way up could be a good way to knock out elective requirements. This could also be a good way to choose a minor or a concentration. Just remember that art classes are pretty intensive, so if you’re the artistic type these classes are perfect for you.
