There are three synonymous parts of every holiday season; friends, family and food. Everyone knows it is absolutely impossible to avoid your favorite perfectly tender turkey at Thanksgiving, mouth watering home cooked meals and the best part of all, the decadent desserts that come with the holiday season. This time only comes once a year, meaning all the food only comes once a year too. What more of a reason do we truly need to allow ourselves to indulge a bit while spending time with our family and friends? We don’t need a better one, so this holiday season forget about the calories and enjoy all the festive foods, after all this time of year only comes once.
My first weakness at holiday parties is undoubtedly chips and dip. It’s the perfect combination of smooth and crunchy while satisfying both your sweet and salty cravings. Walking into a warm and welcoming house with a table full of a variety of dips is a common occurrence during the holidays, from the classic French Onion or Spinach & Artichoke to Buffalo Chicken dip. Although too many appetizers may spoil your appetite for the main meal it’s just about impossible to keep from at least trying one or two of them. Perhaps this season you’ll even be a little adventurous and try that peculiar dip your crazy Aunt always brings. Check out a great recipe for Buffalo Chicken dip here, as well as browse for other tasty recipes to try this holiday season! For a healthier appetizer swap the chips for veggies with these awesome party appetizers.
There are always ways to make healthy choices while indulging!
Being a vegetarian I may not enjoy turkey on Thanksgiving or perfectly cooked ham on Christmas day, however, there are many other delicious foods that grace the tables during the holidays. From fresh out of the oven dinner rolls to creamy mashed potatoes and soft stuffing there is a laundry list of to-die-for foods. Sweet potatoes are a great holiday tradition and also a great source of nutrients such as fiber, Vitamin A, Vitamin C and Potassium. This holiday season broaden your horizons and try this nutritious fall food, here is a tasty and easy to make recipeyou can add to your family’s holiday table this season. Another delicious dish seen during the holidays is roasted root vegetables, such as squash, potatoes, carrots, sweet potatoes, turnips and onions just to name a few. These are all great sources of health boosting nutrients such as fiber, folic acid and tons of vitamins and minerals. Here is a great recipe for a tasty version of roasted veggies.
Like most of you I’m sure, I have a bit of a sweet tooth, unfortunately this is a terrible flaw to have when the holidays roll around. Platters of cookies, fudge, pies, chocolates and everything in between are a staple at every holiday party. When I think of holiday desserts the first thing that comes to my mind are my mom’s famous mint brownies. Layers of fudge-like brownies and creamy mint frosting all covered with a layer of milk chocolate, absolutely to die for. Although my mom’s mint brownies can’t be duplicated in my opinion, here is a similar recipe. Bring these to your family party this year and you’ll be the star of the night.
This holiday season be a little adventurous and try something you never have. Embrace the time you have with your friends, family and food by forgoing your worries about calories and simply enjoy the wonderful treats and holiday favorites that only come once a year.
