Hey, Collegiettes! While other social media sites are pretty sweet for getting messages out or catching up with friends, for sheer content creation, sharing, and community Tumblr is a cut above them. While admittedly I do waste a fair amount of time there, it’s all in the name of finding cool things. While yours and my tastes may differ, as anyone’s would, I’ve compiled a list of 10 Tumblrs that I think you should follow if you have an account on there. Here they are in no particular order:
1. http://artreats.tumblr.com/
This blog is kind of a smorgasbord of different paintings, pictures, sculptures, and other cool art pieces. It culls from many sources to get what they have on there, some are original and some are reblogs, but whenever you see something of theirs on your dash it’s more often than not going to be a sweet piece of art that you’ve never seen before.
2. http://respectfulrappers.tumblr.com/
This blog is cool because it takes some of the sexually graphic, misogynistic, racist, homophobic, or just plain nasty things that rappers say in their songs and then puts them in a new format that’s more positive overall. Check it out and you’ll probably find it pretty funny and it could be a breath of fresh air.
3. http://gracehelbig.tumblr.com/
If you’ve never seen anything by vlogger, comedienne, and actress Grace Helbig, you’re definitely missing out. Her Tumblr gives an insight into her life and also a chance for you to contribute to some of her videos. Check it out and I promise you won’t regret it.
4. http://thebobsburgerexperiment.tumblr.com/
For any of you that watch the show Bob’s Burgers (which, from what I’ve seen, is pretty sweet) you may notice that they have lots of punny burger names written on the menu in the show. This blog is dedicated to making those hypothetical burgers. With names such as “In a Leek of Their Own,” “I Know Why The Cajun Burger Sings,” and “If Looks Could Kale,” they dish up some of the best burgers and puns in the business, and even if you have no clue what the show is at all, they’re funny and they look delicious.
5. http://lastwattrans.tumblr.com/
This is a blog affiliated with the Last Watt record label based in Western Massachusetts, and you can check them out for cool local bands, cool pictures of the Valley and the Berkshires, and good music that’s just whatever they wanted to put up that day. Seriously, check it out and you may see a UMass band or two up on there.
6. http://buzzfeedminusgifs.tumblr.com/
In this blog you see how integral GIFs are to Buzzfeed articles and those that take their cue from it. Without those moving pictures, it’s just blocks of seemingly unrelated text that often delve into the absurd. Check it out and you may get a chuckle or two out of it.
7. http://umassamherst.tumblr.com/
Kind of obvious, but still this is definitely one to look at. You can see some of the crazy adventures that our fellow Minutemen and Minutewomen go on. From students taking a semester abroad or the UMMB playing at Macy’s, it’s all up there, and you can see your classmates making waves in the world and doing awesome things.
8. http://adventuresoffloridaman.tumblr.com/
The world’s worst Superhero, all documented on the internet. The Adventures of Florida Man are taken from headlines where newspapers say “Florida Man does (X),” and given Florida as a state it can get pretty crazy. One of the best is “Florida Man’s Instagram Leads to 142 Felony Charges,” but there are tons of others on there that make you wish you had read the entire article.
9. http://wtfevolution.tumblr.com/
For those of you who are very into animals and the natural world, here’s one that shows where natural selection goes substantially awry. I simply have no words for some of these pictures, so check them out for yourself and see what you think.
10. http://heelsandfashion.tumblr.com/
Admittedly, I don’t know that much about fashion. But all the stuff on here looks pretty sweet, and if you’re into clothes and style and all that jazz, you could do much worse than taking a peek here.
Hopefully that’s a good enough list to start off with. Happy blogging, Collegiettes!
