Music has always served as a therapeutic outlet for me, but especially during the pandemic when I had so much time to create new playlists and discover new artists. Putting in earbuds and dancing around my room was the perfect escape when the stress of the world got to be a bit too much. Too often female artists are overshadowed or doubted for their talent and musical intelligence. That is why I focused a lot of my time on discovering powerful women in music. In honor of International Women’s Month, I would like to share some of these incredible musicians for you to add to your next playlist!Â
- Sarah Kinsley
-
Sarah Kinsley’s music gives off a mix of Pop and Indy styles. Entering the music scene back in 2018, Kinsley continues to build her audience and balance everyday life by making music in her college dorm room. Releasing her first EP last April, Kinsley is definitely an artist to keep your eye on. Between writing, singing, and producing her own music you could say she’s a triple threat! Be on the lookout for new music from her dropping this spring. Special shoutout to one of her first singles “Open Your Eyes,” one of my favorites on her discography.Â
- Lexi Jayde
-
Similar to Sarah Kinsley, Lexi Jayde gives off a mix of Pop and Indy in her music. If you are a Cigarettes After Sex or Goody Grace fan, you may recognize Jayde for being featured on their song “On Repeat.” Jayde, only 18-years-old, has just joined the music scene in 2020 after acting for most of her life. However, her recent beginnings do not take away from her expertise in music. Jayde takes writing inspiration from her personal experiences and strives to create relatable content. Her most recent release, “Newbury Park,” is one of my favorites!Â
- Mega
-
One of my absolute favorite up-and-coming artists has to be Mega. Mega’s first single, “Chariot,” was released back in 2018 and after waiting for what felt like forever, Mega released her first EP, Future Me, in 2020. Mega’s music is very soulful and is perfect for that chill/study playlist. Her powerful voice and soothing tone bring me so much peace when I need to relax from a long day. Her music focuses on self-love and growth, with inspiration from Arthea Franklin, Nina Simone, and other incredible artists. The talent behind Mega’s voice is undeniable and I highly recommend her music!Â
- Elah Hale
-
Elah Hale, an R&B/soul artist, started her music career at the young age of 17, now only three years later she has released four singles and an EP. Hale has been musically talented all her life, singing and writing songs for the first time at age 7. Hale’s music focuses on the complications and excitements that come along with all types of relationships. My favorite song off of her EP, Room 206, has to be “My House.” Her unique style adds a bit of spice to any playlist.Â
- Teyanna TaylorÂ
-
The final powerful female artist is Teyanna Taylor. Although Taylor already has a significant following, I had to give her an honorable mention for being one of my favorite artists. Releasing R&B hits since 2014, Taylor has collaborated with some incredible artists such as Miss Lauryn Hill, Kehlani, and Missy Elliot. Her album K.T.S.E. has to be my absolute favorite with a special mention to the song “Hold On/Issues.” The Harlem native has so much more to share with the world than just a good beat. If you haven’t yet, definitely check out the immensely talented Teyanna Taylor.Â
Here’s to supporting women in music and hopefully discovering your next favorite artist!Â
