If I’ve learned anything from my years of (too much) TV watching, it’s that, holy moly, there are a lot of options. And with the plethora of choices available to watch on the different streaming services (Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, etc.), choosing what to watch can seem overwhelming. It’s easy to get lost in this ocean of options, but in my opinion, there are some shows out there that aren’t getting nearly as much attention as they deserve. Here are my top 5 picks for current underrated TV shows:
Brooklyn Nine-Nine
Network: Fox, Tuesdays 9/8c
Available to Stream?: Yes, Hulu Plus
How had I never watched this show before this year? Laugh-out-loud hilarious. But that’s to be expected from Andy Samberg. Now in its third seasion, this police sitcom will have you in stitches.
PS- The humor has a Parks and Rec vibe to it.Ā
Jane The Virgin
Network: The CW, Mondays 9/8c
Available To Stream?: Yes, Netflix & Hulu Plus
I will be honest, I was skeptical to start this show because I thought the premise seemed silly. That was back when I was young and naĆÆve. Now that I’ve matured, I’ve come to realize that this show is amazing. It’s got comedy, drama, crime, love triangles, and most importantly, Gina Rodriguez, my new queen. Her leading role earned her a Golden Globe win (and a big place in my heart). Once you start, you’ll be hooked.
The Mindy ProjectĀ
Network: Fox/Hulu
Available To Stream?: Yes, Hulu Plus
I adore Mindy Kaling. She is so talented, intelligent, and hilarious. In the series, she plays the role of a successful OB/GYN, making her way through life and work, alongside her motley crew of friends and co-workers. After three seasons, Fox cancelled the series (BOO!), but Hulu picked it up (YAY!) for the fourth season. Get streaming! Unbreakable Kimmie Schmidt
Network: Netflix Original
Available To Stream?: Yes, Netflix
Pure comic gold from The Office’s Ellie Kemper. The show was created by Tina Fey (need I say more?), and is about a young woman who is rescued from a cult after being trapped in an underground bunker for 15 years, and now has to adjust to life in NYC. Season 2 premieres in April, so you’ve got plenty of time to get caught up.
Billy on the Street
Network: truTV, Wednesdays 11/10c
Available to Stream?: Yes, segments on YouTube and full episodes on the truTV website
You might remember Billy Eichner from his role as Craig on Parks and Recreation. Now he hosts a comedic game show in which he runs up to strangers on the streets of NYC and asks them pop culture related questions (often with subjective answers) for a dollar. Needless to say, hilarity ensues. Photo Sources: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
