A Review of Halloween 2022 Costume Trends: College Version

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

Halloween 2022 proved just how creative, yet classic this generation of college students can be with their costumes. From a play on something classic like Toy Story characters to something totally new and never seen before, here are a few I saw a lot of and really loved the creativity with! Lots of these are totally possible with items you likely already have in your closet, too!

The Princess Diaries

As someone who has seen these movies more times than I can count, seeing the Mia Thermopolis costume made me wish I had done this, too! Just grab a simple white dress, a tiara, some dark sunglasses, and a headset, and you’re good to go! So simple yet super cute.

The Scooby Doo Mystery Gang

Although Scooby Doo has been a thing since the 70s, I saw a huge revival of the Mystery Gang in costumes this Halloween. Super fun to do with a group as you have Velma, Daphne, Fred, Shaggy, Scooby, and even sometimes Scrappy! With group costumes like this, it can sometimes be a game to see if you can spot the rest of the crew once you have seen one.

Carrie

As another one of my all-time favorite movies, everyone who did this costume pulled it off so well. I always love a crown moment, so add in the silky dress and some fake blood, and it looks just like the movie. It can almost double as a scary princess costume too, so not everyone necessarily has to get the movie reference.

Cheerleaders – Euphoria and Glee

While Maddy and Cassie from Euphoria have been done in years past since the premiere of the show, their iconic teal, black, and white diamond studded uniforms seemed to be the major hit this year. The iconic makeup looks that went with this costume were amazing, too, with the gemstones around the eyes and super shiny eyeshadow. The Cheerios, the cheerleaders from the show Glee seemed to also be a popular outfit this year. Their classic WHS red and white uniforms and the high ponytails, so cute.

Barbie (& Ken)

With the new Barbie movie starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling coming out soon, there seemed to be a massive wave of new Barbie costumes this season. Margot Robbie always plays absolutely legendary roles, so it’s no wonder her new Barbie outfits were a common one this year! I adored the bright pink set with the bell-bottom jeans. It’s not too hard to turn into a couples costume as the classic Ken look with the ascot is really simple to do.

PAm & Tommy

Straight from the 90s, I saw a ton of takes on Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee all over my TikTok For You Page. Although they can be a little controversial, having watched the Pam & Tommy Hulu show, I had a massive appreciation for these costumes. Pamela was, and still is a total legend and I loved seeing a revival of the classic 90s look: thin eyebrows, dark eye makeup, and the big, blonde blowout.

As a senior, my last college Halloweekend certainly did not disappoint! I enjoy seeing others’ costumes more than figuring out my own, so these were just a few of my favorites! I know I’ll definitely be taking a few of these into consideration for next year.
