Hey Collegiettes, are you tired of overdone clichés and corny dialogue? Do you cringe at kisses in the rain and contrived romance? Then perhaps this Valentine’s Day, chill out with your best girlfriends and watch something that doesn’t make you want to vomit sparkles and candy hearts.
1. “The Princess Bride”
Based on William Goldman’s book of the same name, “The Princess Bride” is not your average, run-of-the-mill fairytale romance. Not only is the sole purpose of “The Princess Bride” to poke fun at the tropes of heroes, damsels and villains, but it is also a tried-and-true classic. If you haven’t seen it before, make it a point to do so this Valentine’s Day.
2. “Mad Max: Fury Road”
Since its debut in the summer of 2015, “Mad Max: Fury Road” has been hailed by critics for its combination of a feminist narrative and a pure action storyline. What could be better than two hours of badass women fighting for their freedom in a post-apocalyptic desert?
3. “Moonrise Kingdom”
“Moonrise Kingdom” is Wes Anderson at his most Wes Anderson-ness. Set at the end of summer in 1965, the film follows Sam and Suzy, two 12-year-olds who decide they’re in love and run away together, causing a hilarious and endearing chain reaction all over the Island of New Penzance. The juxtaposition between the righteous, innocent children and the disheartened adults that surround them makes for quite a moving picture.
4. “Mulan”
How better to enjoy the ones you love by belting out the catchiest songs from one of the most classic Disney films ever produced? While I’m sure its feminist tones are obvious today, it’s still fun to go back to that point in time when your childhood self realized that you, too, could “get down to business” to defeat the Huns in your life.
Grab your girlfriends, some candy, and one of these classic films, and enjoy your Valentine’s Day!
