Cold Weather Essentials: Where to Splurge and Where to Save

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

Cold weather is almost upon us (as if you didn’t already know!) and it’s time to bundle up. But keeping to your budget has never been more important, and when the temperature drops, you suddenly want to buy everything necessary to stay warm. Never fear! Here is your go-to guide on where to save and where to splurge on your cold weather essentials. If you invest in the proper pieces, and save cash where it doesn’t count, you can still have enough money left over for the weekend!

SPLURGE: Boots – Invest in good footwear! A quality pair of leather or winter boots can last literally decades, and you can tell when a pair of shoes is cheap (not so much with a lot of other pieces!). You’re going to be trekking through mud, snow, and ice in these – so you want something that will stay looking good and feeling good – nobody wants the sole of their shoe leaking in a wet hike cross campus.

SAVE: Mittens/Gloves – Not to say you shouldn’t spend a lot on a pair you find irresistible, but let’s be honest—chances are, you will lose a mitten or two over the course of the winter. Save here: you can buy a whole bunch of cheap gloves, and mix it up this season.

SPLURGE: Jeans – You’re going to be wearing your jeans all the time this time of year. You might as well love them! Find a pair that makes you look and feel good, even if it means spending a little extra. Again, a well-made pair of jeans can last you forever, so invest here.

SAVE: T-Shirts – Long sleeved tees are great for layering under sweaters and sweatshirts. But there’s no need to spend a ton on these— an expensive t-shirt looks just like its cheaper counterparts, and will keep you just as warm. Plus, with all the wash and wear, a tee is going to get worn out pretty fast. Save your cash here—you can buy nice tees in bulk at probably every other store in the mall.

SPLURGE: Coats/Jackets – No one wants to be cold in their winter jacket, and chances are you will wear this almost everyday. Find one you like that keeps you nice and warm, even if you have to spend a little extra. It will be worth it in the long run!

Think of these as your guidelines to budgeting your winter wardrobe. You don’t have to stick to this strictly, but it’s definitely a starting point to keep you warm and wealthy, or at least not broke. Good luck!
