Spring is here! The days are getting warmer, the nights are getting shorter, and it’s the perfect time for love. Whether you have a new spring fling or are continuing to see your winter sweetheart, watching Grey’s Anatomy for the 10th time isn’t going to cut it anymore. But, even I admit, it can be hard finding creative date ideas.
COIN is an American Indie Pop band that was formed in 2012. Since their hit single “Run”, released in 2015, they’ve been considered to be one of the many mainstream artists on the Indie Pop scene. However, don’t worry if you’re not familiar with them. Even just listening to them once is enough to make you fall in love.
The first time I saw them live was at the Pearl Street Night Club in Northampton, MA. A week before the show, a friend had asked me if I wanted to go see a concert. She said it was for this band called COIN. On a whim I agreed. Looking back, I think it was one of the best decisions that I’ve made in college.
Each album reminds me of the brightness of the Neon Trees mixed with the catchy style of Matt and Kim. COIN’s newest album Dreamland, released February 21, is no exception. Though Dreamland was released a little after Valentine’s Day, there’s still a lot of inspiration that can be taken from these four daydream-like songs and turned into creative dates.
- Simple Romance
-
With its quick rhythm and upbeat vocals, “Simple Romance” reminds me of taking a dance class with a partner. Whether it’s Salsa, Swing, Waltz, or Tango, taking a dance class together can be extremely rewarding. By putting you in a sometimes awkward environment, it can help you to learn about one another in a different way than any dinner date could. While it may not be the cheapest date idea out there, for UMass Amherst students, the Ballroom Dance Team hosts socials that everyone is welcome to. So get ready to take your partner and dance the night away!
- Babe Ruth
-
As the name suggests, “Babe Ruth” is reminiscent of taking your date out to the ballpark. Even if neither of you are into baseball, it can still be a grand slam of a time. If you’re looking for a cheaper alternative to the traditional Fenway experience, try watching the UMass Amherst baseball team. They have some really great players and intense rivalries that are sure to make any game a ton of fun! However, if a Red Sox game is still what you’re after, check out Student 9s! Student 9s is a discount ticket service present by L.L. Bean, that makes you eligible for $9 Red Sox tickets and other promotional offers.
- Crash My Car
-
With the lead singer claiming that he’ll “drive you home at the end of the night”, “Crash My Car” provides inspiration for a unique type of destination date. All you need is your date, a car, and a coin. Once you start driving, when you come across an intersection, flip the coin. Next, make a rule that you’ll have to follow for the rest of the ride, like turn right if the coin lands on heads or turn left if the coin lands on tails. Do this as many times as you’d like until you’re satisfied with your surroundings. Then make a date out of where you are! This process can be a fun, easy way to explore the area around you and check out some amazing destinations.
- Youuu
-
This last song is smoother than some of the others on the album. Focusing on the fight to hold onto the best memories, “Youuu” reminds me of working out together. Like dancing, it may seem awkward to do at first but it can also be so rewarding. Imagine having that post-workout glow while sipping on protein shakes with your date – so cute! Although, if running or lifting weights at the gym sounds intimidating, try hiking! Hiking is a great way to stay active without infringing upon vulnerability. You can look cute and stay active while you climb your way up to the top.
No matter what you choose to do, there are always dates that won’t cost a COIN.
