My absolute favorite season is fall. The trees are full of bright oranges, reds, and yellows, and the cool weather makes it a clear favorite out of the four very different seasons. Adding on to why I love fall so much, every fall I watch Gilmore Girls. It is my annual tradition: welcoming autumn by watching a show that exemplifies fall in a small New England town. In addition, the show is mainly filmed in autumn, constantly showcasing the town of Stars Hollow full of autumn leaves and sweaters.Â
Yes, Gilmore Girls, in my opinion, is the absolute best show to watch in the fall. It epitomizes the overall vibe of fall in a television show, where you feel warm and cozy as you watch the story of a mother and daughter go through whatever life throws their way. Set in Connecticut, it showcases the stunning New England fall and the small-town vibe, where the architecture is old and the community is tightly knit. It also always mentions a hot cup of coffee, which epitomizes the fall vibe.
Released in 2000, Gilmore Girls is about a single mother, Lorelai, and her daughter, Rory. The show focuses on both of their stories, and the ups and downs both encounter as they go through life and learn lessons. It explores life as a single mother for Lorelai, as well as Rory’s life as a teenager who is trying to find her way in the world. The story is heartwarming, emotional, and hilarious, making you both cry and laugh. It is highly relatable, and for a student like me, I constantly see myself relating to Rory and her struggles as she attempts to find herself throughout her schooling years. As I grow up, I find myself connecting to the new eras of Rory’s life: being able to understand her high school struggles, and her college struggles as she navigates newfound independence.Â
For me, it helps to distract myself from the overall stressors of life, especially school. I can end every night watching an episode knowing it will make me laugh and take my mind off things. It’s a comfort show that brings me back to simpler times, reminding me of the first time I watched it and where I was in life compared to now. It is also a perfect TV show to put on as background noise when you are doing chores around the house or dorm, and it’s my go-to show to put on as I clean.Â
So, if you are looking for a new show to start (or rewatch) consider Gilmore Girls. Watching the show feels like a cozy fall day, where you sip a large cup of coffee and wrap yourself in a blanket. It is the definition of a perfect television show, and as the theme song, Carol King’s “Where You Lead,” says: “If you’re out on the road, feeling lonely and so cold, all you have to do is call my name.” Call Gilmore Girls‘ name, and find the perfect show to help you stay cozy this fall.Â
