Honestly what can’t Harry Styles do at this point? After leaving One Direction he’s succeeded in having a successful solo career, starred in a Christopher Nolan film, put out two albums, and has been one of the biggest names in the music industry this year. Styles has won over the hearts of so many through his iconic fashion sense, challenging gender norms, and his message of inclusivity at all his shows. His slogan “Treat People With Kindness” shows everything he stands for. Throughout his solo career Styles has covered many songs including Kanye West’s “Ultralight Beam” and Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide.” Here are some of my favorites that may be better than the originals in my opinion.
- Stockholm Syndrome
-
Stockholm Syndrome is an original One Direction song, but it was written by Harry Styles during his time in the band. Styles has sung many One Direction songs on his tour while adding his own touch to each song like this one. Stockholm Syndrome is one of my favorite One Direction songs, and it was a great experience hearing Styles sing the song live at his concert in Boston!
- You’re Still The One
-
When asked about who inspires his music Styles lists artists such as the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, and Fleetwood Mac, but one artist who comes as a little bit of a shock is Shania Twain. He has said that he grew up with his mom playing a lot of her music, and that she is one of his biggest influences in fashion and music. During his tour in 2018, Styles covered “You’re Still The One” with Kacey Musgraves in Madison Square Garden. Check out their amazing duet here.
- If I Could Fly
-
If I Could Fly is another One Direction song written by Styles. The love song is very emotional to listen to. During his tour Styles performed a stripped down version of the song which really showcased the lyrics.
- Juice
-
A collab that was everything I needed this year. Lizzo and Harry Styles sang “Juice” together during Lizzo’s pre-Super Bowl concert at the beginning of this year. Styles also covered the song on his own in a BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge performance. He has said he is a huge fan of Lizzo, and the two seem to have an adorable friendship.
- Wonderful Christmastime
-
During a BBC 1 Radio Live Lounge in December 2019 Harry Styles covered Sir Paul McCartney’s “Wonderful Christmastime.” It’s the perfect cover to get anyone in the holiday spirit. Styles is wearing his signature pearl necklace and his own merch in the video. If only he released a whole Christmas album the holidays would be complete.
- Girl Crush
-
Styles covered Little Big Town’s “Girl Crush” only a handful of times, but it was life changing. This country cover demonstrates the wide range of Styles’ music taste. My favorite performance of this cover by Styles was in Japan during one of his concerts. The crowd was silent and it was just him and his guitar.
- Just A Little Bit Of Your Heart
-
Styles wrote “Just A Little Bit Of Your Heart,” but Ariana Grande actually recorded the song for her album My Everything. It is an emotional song with lyrics such as “I know I’m not your only, but at least I’m one.” Styles has sung the song on his tours, and the audience is often brought to silence with all the emotion behind the song.
- The Chain
-
Styles is a massive fan of Fleetwood Mac, and has brought out Stevie Nicks at a few of his concerts now to sing with him. Nicks has even called him “the son I never had.” Styles covered “The Chain” during his last tour, Live On Tour. This might be my favorite cover that he has done!
Needless to say I am dying to see what covers he will add to his setlist for Love On Tour when concerts resume again, but for now I will keep these covers on repeat!
