Hidden Gem: Amherst Cinema

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

With a diverse population and lots of great dining choices, activities, museums, and other destinations, there’s no wondering why Amherst, MA is consistently rated one of the top college towns in the country. But many people have never heard of one of my favorite destinations in downtown Amherst: Amherst Cinema. Located at 28 Amity St. (right next to Bank of America), Amherst Cinema is a cool place to check out any time of the week.

What makes Amherst Cinema different is that they play independent films almost exclusively. From comedies to dramas, plays, and documentaries, there’s something for everyone to see.

What makes the programming at Amherst Cinema so unique is that they play really cool movies that never hit the major theaters but have interesting storylines and star well-known actors in roles you may not otherwise have the opportunity to see them in. Eva Longoria, Bradley Cooper, Ryan Gosling, and Daniel Radcliffe – just to name a few – are some of the stars that have been in films this theater shows.

As strange as this sounds, I was a little hesitant at first to see a movie here; I had always had this (incorrect) belief that independent movies were weird and just not for me. I have now been to the cinema twice and I have loved both the movies I have seen there.

Another interesting feature at Amherst Cinema is their “Late Nite” movies, which play Fridays at 10PM. These are throwback movies that change weekly, and have included such films as Space Jam and Men in Black.

Additionally, pricing at the theater is very reasonable: $6.75 for matinees and $7.75 (with Student ID) for movies after 5PM.

The concession stand at the theater is really cool too, serving popcorn, fountain drinks and candy, as well as baked goods and alcoholic beverages.

So grab a slice at Antonio’s (which now accepts UCard Debit!) and catch a flick at Amherst Cinema for a great night out for just over $10!
