This winter seems to be colder than I remember past years to be. Maybe it’s all the talk of “polar vortex” temperatures and long, negative-degree walks to classes that are 15 minutes away. With all the freezing temperatures, gray skies, and snowy covered grounds, it is easy to become part of the winter blues. This is clinically called Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). But there are ways to fight feeling down this winter!
Here are some tips:
1. Exercise
Aerobic exercise is one of the best things for fighting feeling down. Exercising releases endorphins, the “feel-good” hormone, which is perfect for fighting the winter blues.
2. Dress brightly
With all the cold temperatures, it is hard to see anything outside that isn’t colored gray or white. Try to brighten how you feel by wearing bright colors. Whether that be colored pants or a jacket, or even adding a bright colored scarf to the outfit, the bright colors will prevent you from feeling down. Feel confident!
3. Good nutrition
Continue to maintain a balanced diet full of fruits and vegetables. If there isn’t enough balance, be sure to consume daily multivitamins. The nutrients will help positively affect mood and energy. With an uplifted mood and more motivation, winter won’t seem as dreary!
4. Get a good night’s sleep
Sleep is so imperative for allowing the body to rest. With a lack of sleep, the body will become more susceptible to catching colds or different viruses. Allowing the body to fully rest will help fight SAD because with restful sleep comes more energy.
5. Embrace the Winter
Have you ever wanted to try skiing but never got around to it? What about ice skating? There are many activities that only the winter time will allow. Once it snows enough, try sledding, building a snowman or maybe starting a snowball fight! Mullins Center provides public skating options as well as plenty of men’s hockey games to attend. Try to embrace the winter and there will be something to look forward to.
Happy winter, Collegiettes™!
