I’m not sure that there is anything more important to a girl than finally getting the perfect hair elastic. When you open up a package of new hair ties, they just aren’t right.
First off you can’t wear any on your wrists because you risk losing a hand. Until it fits, you have to remember elastics in your bag, and if your memory is anything like mine that basically means you’re always looking for an elastic.
When you finally get one and try to put your hair up though, it’s time for the next struggle. You can’t yet wrap it around three times, but twice isn’t enough! And the elastic just keeps falling off.
So let’s say you stretch one elastic long enough to make it the perfect fit. And you don’t end up losing it. Then there will come that fateful day when one of your friends looks around and asks to borrow a hair elastic. And they really do need it. There you are, the only one with an elastic.
But it’s the elastic. It’s the elastic you’ve been working on forever and it fits your wrist just right. It’s just too big of a sacrifice for even the best of friends.
So now you’ve had this elastic for a while, it has been through a lot with you. You don’t know what you’d do without it.
And then it happens.
It starts to fray and the elastic underneath is exposed. Now it’s just a matter of time before it breaks.
Rather than see your dear companion perish, you start to train a new elastic. And the game begins again. And yet another struggle of being a girl continues. But know this, you are not alone.
