There comes a time in your college life when it seems like everyone you know is going abroad. Everyone including your BFF.
You’re really happy for her because it’s a time to grow and maybe find true love like those cliche teenage movies, (or maybe just the Lizzie McGuire Movie). She’s going to be shopping in Paris, eating a baguette fresh from the bake shop on the corner, taking a selfie with the Eiffel Tower, and learning how to speak a different language.
Now you have to cope with not having your other half by your side and not being able to message her whenever you spot your crush at the DCs. There are a lot of problems with having your BFF study abroad…
1. Time zones suck
It’s morning here but it’s night time there. Or you’re out of class and she just got to class. Being in different time zones makes it hard to get in contact with your bestie when she is on other side of the world.
You have one of the world clocks on your phone set to their country and you try to Facebook message them when their messenger icon is blue. When you are finally able to set a time for a Skype date or a phone call you look forward to it the whole day.
2. Catching up takes hours
Since you aren’t able to text your best friend all the time because international messaging rates are ridiculous, catching up via Skype takes hours! Maybe she got a new haircut or a piercing abroad, or maybe she met a cute potential significant other. You demand that she tells you everything in full detail.
3. You feel like you need to stalk all of her social media accounts
You’re always checking her Instagram to make sure that you don’t miss any photo updates. You’re really thankful for Snapchat because it’s kind of like you’re there when she sends you videos of beautiful landscapes and Renaissance architecture. Plus you still get those same old goofy snaps in the middle of the night, which makes you miss her even more.
4. You find yourself looking up ticket prices
She always tells you to visit, and you seriously consider it. Whenever you’re curious you look at round trips to Europe and convince yourself that it’s totally worth it because you wouldn’t have to spend money on a hotel.
But other than those little things, you know that they’re enjoying life and having the experience of a lifetime. Of course knowing that they are happy, makes you happy. But, at the end of the day, you’re still like…
