Recycle and Rewear: Wear Your Winter Clothes in the Spring

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

This is one of my favorite times of the year. Yes, this awkward period in February where it isn’t quite the dead of winter, but it also isn’t spring yet either. The sun is just starting to peak out from the clouds, I no longer have to dress like an Eskimo when I walk to class, and  – most importantly – spring styles are starting to hit the stores.

Sadly, as a nearly broke college student, I can’t go out and buy all of the adorable sundresses and sandals that I want. I like to buy a few small inexpensive pieces to add to my current wardrobe. This doesn’t stop me from raiding the Target clothing racks whenever I go to pick up a few necessities. The key is not to forget about your winter clothes. Just because it isn’t snowing, doesn’t mean that you can’t rock it in the sun! Try adding these pieces to your next outfit.

Cheetah Print

Cheetah Print is always a winter staple, but if worn in the right way, it can class up a boring spring outfit. For the spring, rather than wearing a cheetah as a main focus (like a sweater or skirt), add it in small touches. For example, add a cheetah print belt to flowy bright pink shirt. There are always other accessories to try out too such as bangles, flats, or heels.

Scarves

A scarf is always my go-to clothing item. They make any sweater or shirt look cuter. Scarves are perfect for this time of year because they work well with layering. If you have on a sweater and t-shirt, the scarf will look great even if you get too hot and have to take off the sweater. Just remember to not wear one that is too bulky. You will break out in sweat on your walk to Marcus from Southwest.

Vests

Recently I have been obsessed with vests. They come in all different styles, colors, and even prints. If you’re on a budget, you can snag a great vest at Old Navy. They are cheap, and come in very great basic colors. If you have a little more money to spare, check out J.Crew. Their quilted vests are adorable and don’t add too much bulk. They come in neutrals, pops of color, and even classic navy and white stripes. A stylish trend this spring are jean vests. Don’t be afraid to try it out!

Boots

Don’t retire your favorite riding boots too quickly. I know you want to wear your favorite strappy sandals and Jack Rogers as soon as possible, but I would wait a little longer before you pull them out of your closet. Yes, the sun is shining through the clouds, but your toes will thank you later! Plus, riding boots can easily class up any outfit.

Also, always remember to think about trends. Yes, galaxy leggings may seem edgy and fashionable now, but you will be regretting it in 6 months. Instead of buying a pair for $75 from Blackmilk, you can get them from Love Culture for $6.99. I would rather spend more money on something you can wear for years, like a quality navy blazer.

Stay trendy, Collegiettes!
