Living in our fast–moving world today, the relentless ticking of the clock can be a big source of stress. Forcing us to live off due dates and appointments, managing our time effectively can lead to improved mental wellbeing. Constantly racing against the clock can lead to anxiety and overwhelming thoughts. However, implementing different time management strategies can help us feel a sense of control. One of the most important things of effective time management is prioritization. When we distinguish between the important tasks vs. the not–so–urgent ones, we get a clear opportunity to focus our time and efforts towards what truly matters. By setting realistic goals and spacing out time to finish them, we reduce the pressure of deadlines, giving us space to breathe.

One valuable time management tool is the Pomodoro Technique. It was developed in the late 1980s and it is known to be effective in breaking up large, intimidating tasks into smaller, more manageable chunks. It is based on 25–minute stretches of work, followed by short five–minute breaks. This can make the tasks seem less overwhelming and can reduce stress towards the work while preventing burnout. Understanding our priorities and setting boundaries is important to maintain healthy mental well–being. Learning to say “no” to things that are not as important can help us preserve our energy for what really matters.

In addition to managing time well with regards to college and work, allocating time for self–care, hobbies and time with family and friends is a priority. By maintaining a balance, this will nurture our mental health and enhance our life satisfaction. Taking this time off will help reduce stress, improving your health emotionally, mentally and physically, only making it easier to get your work done. It will make you more motivated, focused and productive without feeling overwhelmed and burnt out. Taking time to be with your loved ones can increase your determination, while allowing you to focus on the bigger things in your life. This can especially help when you are way too focused and stressed over a particular thing in your work life.

These mental breaks are crucial for maintaining focus and overall well being. Sometimes, when you have a bunch of things that need to be finished, it’s easy to immerse yourself completely in your work and grind for hours on end. When time is an asset, taking long breaks may not be realistic. Instead, taking micro-breaks helps refresh your mind. This can include stretching, just closing your eyes, and breathing deeply to improve mental clarity. Even if these breaks only last for two to three minutes, you will get an increase in mood and energy, enabling you to do your work with more efficiency.

Overall in our lives, time management helps us maintain overall mental wellbeing by helping us prioritize balance, set boundaries, and cultivate mindfulness. It encourages a more holistic approach to life, where every aspect requires time and effort. This helps us gain control of our schedules and a profound sense of self.
