Winter in New England is a long ordeal. By October, it’s already time to start breaking out the sweaters, and once it’s December, you’re pretty much strapped in for the wintery ride. Even though March and April are typically considered “spring,” the warm weather isn’t really here to stay until May. What I’m getting at is that half the year is spent in cold misery. For centuries, New Englanders have braved the elements and struggled against the relentless wind, ice, and snow. Once spring rolls around, it’s time to shed the layers and denounce the cold– and here’s a list of other things we denounce, as well.
1. Boots
Once it’s warm enough to wear sandals and flip-flops, there’s no way we’re sticking with our storm-ready winter boots. Boots are durable and fashionable as everyone knows, but when it’s June and sunny, they’re the last thing we want to see.
2. Planning the day around how cold it’s going to be
Waking up in the morning to check your phone and see how frigid the outside world is can be a total drag. During summer, you know it’s going to be warm no matter what, so much less planning is required.
3. Rushing to each building in search of heat
I’m sorry if these images are giving you flashbacks of speed-walking to class with wind blowing in your face while attempting to keep your extremities from getting frostbite. At least you’re getting a leg workout from all the running around.
4. Getting your hopes up for a snow day and then being let down
Nope, there’s no snow day, and yes, you do actually have to go to class. Even when you weren’t anticipating a snow day, it’s still a drag going to class in the cold.
5. Scarves, gloves, jackets, and big socks
This one kind of ties in with the boots, but it’s under a separate category because in your mind you have to lump all of them together to get dressed in the morning. And when it’s time to put them away, they will all be thrown in the back of the closet together in a big pile.
Get ready for the warmth, Collegiettes! Spring is finally coming.
