As a New Jersey native, one of my favorite things is the Jersey shore. The Jersey shore is the coastal region of New Jersey that consists of about 141 miles of oceanfront bordering the Atlantic Ocean. Situated in this coastal region are multiple beach towns that you can visit. While a lot of these beach towns are very fun to visit, the one town I recommend going to the most is Cape May! Cape May is a seaside town located at the tip of southern New Jersey’s Cape May Peninsula. In the past, Cape May has not only been ranked as the number one beach in New Jersey, but also has been ranked as the second-best beach in the U.S. and the ninth best beach in the world. As someone who has been going to Cape May every year since I was a little kid, I can truly say that Cape May has a lot to offer and is the perfect coastal town to visit. Here are some places to go to and things to do when visiting Cape May.
- the beach
-
Since Cape May is a coastal town, you definitely need to spend some time on the beach! Cape May is known for having beautiful beaches and, in my opinion, the best beaches in New Jersey. Whether you want to spend some time in the water or lie on the beach and get some sun, you will definitely have a good time. Even if you are coming to Cape May during the off season, I highly recommend taking a walk on the beach.Â
- washington street mall
-
Washington Street Mall is an adorable outdoor mall that consists of three-square blocks with many shops and restaurants. There are numerous types of shops, some sell clothing, bath products, and other little gifts. Washington Street Mall also has a lot of ice cream shops, a fudge shop, and saltwater taffy shops. I especially love walking around Washington Street Mall during the evening after I’ve eaten dinner and previously spent the day at the beach.Â
- restaurants
-
The Blue Pig Tavern is a restaurant located in a hotel, Congress Hall, that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The Blue Pig Tavern not only has a charming atmosphere, but the food is also great. Everything on the menu always looks appetizing and gives you plenty of meals to choose from. I especially love getting breakfast here: some of my favorite breakfast meals are the stuffed french toast with strawberry mascarpone, the buttermilk pancakes, and the omelets.Â
If you want some good Mexican food, you definitely need to stop at Taco Caballito. Taco Caballito is a Mexican restaurant that is located right across from the beach. My favorite meal at this restaurant is the americano taco with either ground beef or chicken tinga. The menu has a lot of delicious meals to choose from, and you are also always given tortilla chips with guacamole or pico de gallo.Â
- horse and buggy rides
-
One really charming and unique characteristic of Cape May is that you will always see horses walking on the streets giving horse and buggy rides. The Cape May Carriage Company offers horse and buggy rides of historic Cape May. During this horse and buggy ride, you will get a tour of Cape May and get to learn about some of the history of Cape May.
- bed and breakfasts
-
If you are visiting Cape May and are over eighteen, one great option you have is staying it a bed and breakfast! All the bed and breakfasts are located in Victorian homes and offer breakfast to you every day of your visit. One great bed and breakfast is The Mainstay Inn; the Mainstay Inn is not only a gorgeous Victorian home, but also serves a delicious breakfast and afternoon tea every day.Â
- stroll around cape may
-
One of my favorite things to do in Cape May is to just walk down all the streets and look at the Victorian homes. A lot of the homes also have pretty gardens, so you will get to see all the flowers if you come in the spring or summer. There is also a fairly long boardwalk right by the beach that is really nice to walk on at night.Â
Overall, I highly recommend visiting Cape May! Cape May is the perfect vacation spot because it is a really charming coastal town that has a lot to offer. I have made so many great memories in Cape May, and I promise that you will not regret taking a trip here!
