Tired of talking about COVID-19? Try these fun activities with family and friends

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

It feels like all anyone can talk about is the latest coronavirus statistics and updates. And while staying up-to-date on the latest news is important, sometimes you need to unwind and think about literally anything else. Here are some activities you can do with your friends and family (both in-person and remotely) to forget for a few hours that there’s a pandemic going on.

Play some online games.

There are so many different online games to choose from, like JackBox, Psych!, Skribbl.io, and more. Almost any game you want to play has an online version or similar alternative that you can play remotely. Playing a game will keep the conversation away from COVID-19, and instead, you can focus on what’s really important: winning.

Go old school.

There’s plenty of online games, but sometimes it’s fun to play a board game or card game in real life. Today I played a game of Monopoly with my family, which is something we never would have done prior to the pandemic. (We definitely have the time now.) Dig through your old games and find one you haven’t played in a while.

Talk about your favorite memories.

FaceTime with friends is fun, but the conversation can get boring fast because most of us are stuck inside and not doing anything too interesting. To keep the conversation interesting, talk about some of your favorite memories from the past, whether it be an embarrassing childhood story or a favorite vacation. Nothing is better than reminiscing about a fun day trip you took with your friends.

Look ahead to the future.

Have you and your friends always talked about going to Montreal for a weekend but never actually gotten around to doing it? Research fun sites to see and cool places to stay. Don’t actually book anything yet, but making plans for the future will give you something to look forward to.

Learn a language.

If you’ve always wanted to learn another language, then this is the perfect time to do it! If you and a couple of friends agree to learn the same language, you can have calls where you practice your new language skills.

Bring back movie night.

Plan a fun movie night with the people you’re quarantining with, complete with popcorn and snacks. Or, host a virtual movie night with your friends using a website like Netflix Party. There are so many interesting movies that can distract you from everything that’s going on and put a smile on your face.

During this stressful time, it’s more important than ever to spend time with friends and family. We all need a little break or distraction from everything that’s going on right now. Trying some of these activities will allow you to relax and have fun with your loved ones.
