As UMass Parents Weekend approaches, how to spend the glorious game day is on everyone’s mind. Personally, I have mastered the art of school spirit, even when the team you’re cheering for may be losing. UMass game days give us, as a united student body, a chance to come together and cheer on the Minutemen. I believe as the fall semester progresses students become too overwhelmed with papers and midterm exams that school spirit is the last thing on their minds, but sometimes we all need an opportunity to de-stress and have fun! Although I will mostly be focusing on Football game days, I believe in spreading the love across all athletics and look forward to the basketball and hockey season at Mullins. The schedule for this week’s parents weekend is already jam-packed with plenty of activities for parents and students so it may be difficult to make time for the game on Saturday, but I think it’s definitely worth it. On Saturday, October 26th at 1 p.m. the parking lots will be open for tailgating but there are plenty of things you should know and do before then.

When it comes to choosing an outfit for game day, make sure to check the weather forecast. This weekend is expected to be cool, fall weather, so dressing in layers is key. Pinterest and Instagram are great sources of inspiration for trendy game-day outfits. Boots have become a popular choice for footwear at games, paired with a skirt and a cozy sweatshirt. Vintage UMass merchandise is also making a comeback, so raid your parents’ closets or check out the UMass store for some retro gear. Upcycling your own clothes by adding maroon and white accessories can also show off your school spirit in a unique way. Remember, the most important thing is to have fun with your friends and family, so don’t stress too much about your outfit.

Once you have your outfit ready, it’s time to head to the tailgate. The parking lots surrounding McGuirk Stadium are where the party is, and it’s important to plan ahead for transportation. If you live off campus, consider having a designated driver or sharing an Uber with friends. If you live on campus, a leisurely walk to the lots is a great way to start the day. It can get crowded at the tailgate, so sticking with your friends and having a designated meeting spot is essential. Take some time to explore the different food and drink options and enjoy the festive atmosphere.

Tailgating is a great way to build excitement before the game starts. Enjoy some delicious food, maybe a hot dog or some buffalo chicken dip, and soak in the energy of the crowd. Keep an eye out for any special promotions or giveaways, like the Dunkin stand that was at a previous game. Remember to stay safe and drink responsibly, as alcohol can flow freely at tailgates. Planning ahead and staying with your friends will ensure a fun and memorable experience.

After the tailgate, head into the stadium to cheer on the Minutemen. Show your school spirit by getting loud and proud in the stands. Bring some posters or flags to wave and join in on the chants and cheers with your fellow students. Even if the team isn’t winning, supporting your school and having a good time with your friends is what game day is all about.

As the fall semester gets busier, take some time to relax and enjoy the excitement of game day at UMass. Whether you’re a die-hard sports fan or just looking for a fun way to spend the day, game days are a great opportunity to bond with your classmates and show off your school pride. Make the most of parents weekend by planning ahead, dressing up in your best UMass gear, and having a blast at the tailgate and the game. Go Minutemen!
