MARCH INTO CREATIVITY: CELEBRATE NATIONAL CRAFT MONTH WITH THESE 5 CRAFT IDEAS

Updated Published
This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Boston chapter.

Did you know? March is home to National Craft Month, where people are encouraged to tap into their creativity and make something new! Whether you are a seasoned crafter or a complete beginner, March can be your sign to try a new craft that you haven’t had the time for yet or even to try out a craft you’ve never heard of (but looks amazing!) that you can turn into a new hobby or even side hustle. And don’t worry, the goal of all crafts is not to be the best, but simply to have fun, destress, connect with others, let your imagination sore, and try something new; there is no pressure, just fun!

Air Dry Clay Modeling

Estimated Price Level: Low

Estimated Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate

I don’t know about you, but my TikTok and Instagram feeds have been full of people having fun shaping clay into everything from aesthetic jewelry dishes to cute little animals to keychain figurines! Clay is thankfully pretty cheap, as you can find it at many stores at varying prices, and is also pretty accessible even if you are not a seasoned crafter or even a “crafty” person in your own mind. Furthermore, air dry clay does not require an expensive kiln or materials, so with just some markers, clay, and some willpower, you can use your hands to mold whatever your heart desires and just let it sit out to dry! Of course, if you want to get a little bit more crafty, you can buy specialty clay tools to help you shape and add texture to your clay so you can get more intricate designs, but that is not required to still make something adorable!

Pipe Cleaner Art

Estimated Price Level: Low

Estimated Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate

The best part about pipe cleaner art is that pipe cleaners are super affordable and come in every color you could imagine! And, even better, you don’t need any fancy tools or really any skill — just some scissors so you can bend and twist your pipe cleaners to create your own little masterpieces. My Pinterest feed all of February was full of pipe cleaner flowers; they would make the cutest gift for someone you love, or even just make them for yourself and display them in your room!

Tote Bag Painting or Embroidery

Estimated Price Level: Medium

Estimated Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate

It’s a classic for a reason! Personalizing a tote bag with whatever craft skill you like, from painting on some cute flowers and words to embroidering designs. The possibilities are endless, and the outcome is always so pretty! You can practice a skill you already know or take the time to learn something new to add to your bag. Not only will it be a fun craft to do by yourself or with friends, but you will get a very practicable and usable item out of it that you can take to the grocery store, classes, or anywhere!

Crochet Bookmarks

Estimated Price Level: Medium

Estimated Skill Level: Intermediate to Expert

If you have ever wanted to learn how to crochet, or already know how, this can be the perfect craft for you! Instead of a crinkled-up receipt, a sticky note, or dog-earring your book pages, you can make something out of love to keep your place in your book. The possibilities are endless, as you could do something simple that is just your favorite color or little design, or try your hand at some Pinterest-inspired bookmarks like a heart chain or flower and stem bookmark.

Bedazzling or Decoden

Estimated Price Level: Medium to High

Estimated Skill Level: Beginner

Take things you already have around your house, like an empty canvas, lighter, phone case, mirror, etc., and make them your own! Combine rhinestones, charms, pearls, silicone, and charms, and decorate your objects(s) to your heart’s desire. You can pick a specific aesthetic, color, or mood and translate it into whatever you like, so you can have something that represents who you are and your creativity.
