1. Make a picture collage. Pictures are so cheap to print out, and they’re a great way to remember all of your best memories with the people you love. They’re also an easy way to decorate an otherwise blank space. Designate one blank wall or open space solely for hanging up pictures and take it from there.

2. Hang up posters. Buy posters from your favorite bands, celebrities and places. If you’re worried about investing in a nice poster just to tear it down when the school year ends, buy a poster frame to protect it. Like pictures, posters cover a lot of wall space, and it’s nice to be reminded of the things and places you love every time you come back to your room.

3. Make your bed cozy. Buy your favorite color/pattern bedding, invest in quality blankets, and decorate with colorful throw pillows. If your bed looks bright, comfortable and soft, it will feel much more homey and inviting.
4. Hang string lights. In any atmosphere, string lights create a warm cozy glow that makes you feel warm and comfortable. They’re also great for conserving space, as you can swap a lamp for a few strands of lights hung above your bed. Just bring a few Command strips to hang them and you’re good to go!

5. Bring a speaker or stereo system. Nothing makes you feel closer to home than listening to your favorite music. Whether you’re studying or getting ready for a night out, music can bring a sense of familiarity to a new place. It’s hard to feel sad when you’re listening to your favorite song.

6. Stock up on your favorite foods. Whether you have a full kitchen or a mini fridge, it’s still possible to keep at least a few of your favorite foods on hand. Whether you’ve had a stressful day of studying or a long night out, there’s nothing better than coming home to one of your favorite comfort foods. So fill a box with all of your favorite popcorn, candy and snacks for when you get a craving.

7. Fill your room with good smells. Whether it’s candles, incense, or a wax burner, if your room smells good you will feel more comfortable in it. Some dorms and apartments don’t allow you to burn candles, in which case Glade plug-ins are always a great back up. Plus, most candles and burners also serve as more décor for your space.

8. Buy some plants. As you’ve most likely already seen in every picture of aesthetic apartments on the Internet, plants are a must-have when it comes to apartment decoration. The greenery is comforting because it brings some nature into the space, and you can put a small plant pretty much everywhere—nature matches everything!

9. Bring extra seating. If your dorm or apartment doesn’t already include it, bring one or two extra seats. Even if it’s just a fold out chair, it’s important to have in order to make your guests feel like they’re at home, too. There’s nothing worse than visiting a friend and having to clear a spot on the floor to sit!

10. Hang up a dry-erase board…and actually use it! Write down motivational quotes, pin pictures, leave notes and make reminders. Put it somewhere on your wall or desk where you will see it every day. This is extremely helpful to not only stay organized, but also keeping yourself focused and in the right state of mind. Part of making your space feel like home is your mindset, and this will help you maintain positivity.
