The 5 Best Things About Thanksgiving Break

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mich chapter.

Thanksgiving break is filled with so many amazing things that remind us why we love being home. Here are just some of those things that prove why Thanksgiving break is the best!

1. Family

Being independent from your parents at college is great, but going home for Thanksgiving just reminds you how great your family really is. You come home and you’re treated like royalty – you’ve been studying hard all semester so you’re parents want to make sure you get to relax as much as possible. Sure your relatives can get a little annoying when questions like, “So how are your classes going?” or “When are you deciding on your major?” or “When are you getting a boyfriend?” get thrown at you over and over again. But we love our family, and Thanksgiving is the best time to spend quality time with them.

2. Food

Let’s be real, we all want some home-cooked, made-with-love, amazing food that you only get at home. There is something so special and unique about that Thanksgiving feast that we’re all looking forward to. Whether it’s the traditional Turkey and stuffing or your family’s own variation on the classic holiday foods, Thanksgiving dinner is always a highlight of the break. We have eaten so much dining hall food, fast food, take-out food, and snacks that we substitute as real food. Thanksgiving break just comes with so much amazing food that makes going home that much better.

3. High School Friends

Although we have made such amazing life-long friends here at Michigan, it’s always fun to reunite those home friends who you haven’t seen in a while. There is nothing like talking about your time in high school with your best friends, reminiscing on all of the silly and embarassing things that you did. All of those stories that start with “OMG, remember when…” bring back so many memories that leave you guys laughing on the floor. Talking about your different stories and adventures while at college is always fun, especially when you brag about your amazing time at Michigan, because we all know Michigan is the best school out there.

4. Shopping

No matter where you like to shop, whether it’s huge department stores or little shops in your hometown, everyone has major sales during Thanksgiving. There’s nothing like going on a shopping spree with your mom to get some new sweaters, scarves, and boots to prepare you for the Michigan winter that is about to come (or has basically already started). It’s all about Black Friday – just be prepared for an early wake-up and really aggressive shoppers!

5. Football

Nothing screams Thanksgiving like football. Whether you’re rooting for your favorite NFL team or cheering for the Wolverines in the Michigan vs. OSU game, you know that football is a huge part of Thanksgiving. Grab some guacamole and chips, get your family in the living room, and watch your favorite team in typical Thanksgiving tradition. And if you’re not into watching football, I really recommend that you watch the Friends marathon of Thanksgiving episodes or maybe indulge in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade!
