As we step further into the fall season and find ourselves immersed in the changing colors of the leaves, pumpkin spiced treats, and spooky decorations, it is common to long for a cozy getaway. Whether in good company or alone, a weekend away to calm our minds and take in the beautiful weather is always much appreciated. This past fall break, I found myself, as a busy college student, in major need of this type of mental reset. Going to school in Ann Arbor, Michigan, I looked for a quick and easy option that would give me exactly what I was looking for. The answer was Mackinac Island.Â
Mackinac Island is a gem in the state of Michigan. It is located between the upper and lower peninsulas and is easily accessible from many parts of the Midwest. Although Mackinac is a fall paradise, a visit at any time of year is a trip worth making.Â
To reach the island, you must first find yourself at the ferry port in Mackinaw City, where ferries depart for the island. While you wait for compatible ferry times, this cute town has food and shopping options to stroll through. While there are lodging options available on the island itself, I would encourage exploring the accommodations in this quaint little town; it typically has cheaper options located right next to the ferry terminals! The ferry ride itself is an easy 20 minutes, with charming views of the deep blue water and the amazing Mackinac Bridge.Â
Immediately off the ferry, you are greeted by fresh island air and an endearing strip of shops and restaurants. With no cars and cobblestone streets, as you walk through the main strip you will find yourself transported into the delightful, colonial-esq ambiance. Be sure that you grab a nice lunch at the classic Pink Pony, an embodiment of the island’s history, before roaming through the shops filled with island tchotchkes and Mackinac merch. Oh–and do not forget to leave without the island’s speciality, Murdicks fudge!Â
Perhaps the most important part of your visit: exploring the island! A mere 8.2 miles around the perimeter (and with no cars allowed) biking is the best way to see all of the unique geography that Mackinac holds. The Arch Rock is one of the must-stops along the ride because of its fantastic photo-op with the vibrant water. If biking isn’t your thing, horse-drawn carriages or horseback riding is available, as well as good old fashioned walking. No matter how you travel around, it will be the perfect fall experience.
