At Michigan, back to school doesn’t just mean back to homework and studying, it means back to football season! Football Saturdays are the best day of the week; a time that students look forward to all year….and a big part of game day is one’s attire. Guys have it easy. They just throw on a pair of shorts or jeans and top it off with their favorite Michigan logo shirt. Maybe they add a maize and blue hat or scarf when it’s cold, but it’s pretty straightforward. Girls, however, have a lot of things to consider when putting together the perfect game day outfit.
First, we need to make sure we’re wearing something that is easy to move around in and flexible for all types of weather. As we all know, the weather in Ann Arbor is temperamental and can change within minutes. For the first few games when it’s still hot, opt for a pair of spandex shorts, either in black or blue, and then switch to leggings when it becomes cooler. For those games when it’s close to freezing, you can wear long underwear under a pair of leggings for a little added warmth. Score a cute pair of those leggings with the phrase “Hail” printed down the leg at Underground Printing!
Next, the entire outfit must scream maize and blue. A simple Michigan T-Shirt will not suffice. To be totally game day ready, you need a blue or maize shirt, some sort of headpiece (whether a bow, headband or clip), maize/blue socks and/or shoes and to top it off, a block M sticker (or two) on your face! Now you’re ready for the camera.
Finally, you need something to carry all of your essentials in. There are a couple of options for this. Option 1 is a fanny pack. Many sororities give them to their girls, but stores such as American Apparel also carry a cute selection. If you’re not a fan of the fanny pack look, invest in a phone case that serves a dual purpose by having room for cards and money. You can stick your MCard, room key, ticket, and some cash in the back and then the only thing you need to carry around with you is your phone!
Most importantly, HAVE FUN! Football is a great tradition at Michigan and take advantage of attending every home game possible. Ask any Alum and they’ll most likely tell you that what they miss most from their college years are the football games….that is, until basketball season!
