With it being the end of midterm season and the beginning of the flu season, here are a couple of free resources available to students at U-M.
HEALTH – OFFERED AT UNIVERSITY HEALTH SERVICES (UHS)
- Free general check-ups, gynecological exams, and nutrition clinics – These are great resources if you are feeling sick, worried about your reproductive health, or have any sort of concern about your dietary needs.*
- 24-Hour Nurse Hotline – If you have concerns about your health but don’t think an exam is necessary or you need help getting an answer immediately, UHS offers a 24-Hour Nurse Hotline where you can speak to nurses about your concerns.
- Free Vaccination – As the flu season starts, there will be vaccination pop-ups, sponsored by places like CVS, in the dining halls and other student hubs around campus. UHS’s home website has a link to a list of the current locations of any pop-ups that are out now.
- Article Database – The UHS website has a host of health-related articles that you can refer to.
*Make sure to contact UHS or the 24-hour nurse line to make sure these offerings are available to you. Coverage may depend on your student status (part-time, full-time, etc.) and your insurance (through the school vs. through your family).
MENTAL HEALTH – THESE SERVICES CAN BE FOUND THROUGH THE WELL-BEING ICON ON YOUR CANVAS
- Wellness Coaching – This is not therapy! This service has students work with a wellness coach to design a plan to optimize a student’s wellness. They have also curated a 1st Year Guide which provides a comprehensive list of suggestions for dealing with common college related problems.
- Therapy – U-M Counseling and Psychological Services offers walk-up services on weekdays and an after-hours phone number for those who need urgent/crisis support. These therapy services are short-term, but CAPS provides community referrals for students who would benefit from long-term therapy.
- CAPS Wellness Center – found in the 4th floor of the U-M Union, the lower level of Pierpont Commons, and the lower level of Munger Residence Hall, CAPS offers a wellness zone (an area equipped with massage chairs, light therapy, and relaxing activities) as well as a 1st-year wellness guide.
- Hawkeye the Service Dog – Hawkeye, a trained therapy dog, can often be found visiting around campus. His location will be disclosed r on his session page.
ACADEMIC
- Office Hours and Tutoring – Most likely offered through your class. Utilize these resources when you are struggling with class or even if you are curious about diving deeper into class content. The instructional team is more than happy to help.
- Libraries – The libraries have a host of resources from study areas, bookable study rooms/carrels, Ask a Librarian (a service that helps you locate resources you need), and the Browse Section (popular books that are often non-academic and include popular fiction and non-fiction books).
- Sweetland Writing Center, Math Lab, Language Resource Center, and Other Similar Services – These services serve to assist students in specific topics such as writing, languages, math, etc. Additionally, some schools (ex. Ross School of Business) might have their own services for more specialized topics.
SOCIAL
- University-based Social Media – Many of the university’s social media promote events that are happening on campus.
- Access to the Arb, Matthaei Botanical Gardens, and the University Museums – These all serve as great options for a free but fun itinerary item for you and your friends to destress.
- Bus Systems – Blue Bus and The Ride both offer free rides to U-M students to get around and explore the Ann Arbor area.
- City Websites – Websites like annarbor.org, a2gov.org, and events.umich.org offer a bunch of potential events and locations to visit.
- Gyms – Students have access to university gyms such as the Intramural Sports Building. These buildings offer recreational sports teams, classes, rentable equipment, open courts, and communal gym equipment.
CAREER – OFFERED BY THE UNIVERSITY CAREER CENTER AND SCHOOL-SPECIFIC CAREER RESOURCES
- Student Employment Office – Offers a list of potential jobs for students to apply for.
- School-Specific Career Resources – Check your specific school (Ross, Nursing, LSA, etc) for a guide to career resources.
- Resume and Internship Workshops – Only offered to Freshmen, these workshops help you build your resume and apply to internships.
