While college is supposed to help you gain the necessary skills needed to succeed in your future profession, that does not mean you cannot actively be furthering your career while in college. There is so much more to do besides attending class and studying. Here’s a list of opportunities and ideas for you to consider in hopes of improving your college career!

1. Talk to Your Advisor

This might seem simple, but if you talk to your adviser about what you want to pursue in the future, either now or later, they will offer plenty of advice on where to start.

2. Schedule an Appointment With Your Departmental Major

Your department will not only give you advice on your major, but they can also set you up with research or internships. They can give you some amazing opportunities and also offer great scholarships to fund your pursuits.

3. LSA Opportunity Hub

If you cannot find what you are looking for within your department, the LSA Opportunity Hub is another great way to find research, internships, and funding. This is a whole department dedicated to helping students find hands-on career opportunities.

4. UMich’s Student Employment Office

The Student Employment Office is not only a great way to find both work study and non-work study jobs, they also have postings that apply to what a student’s majors and educational backgrounds. There are research assistant positions available in labs or opportunities to be a tutor. There is a good chance you can find a job that relates to your major or career and isn’t just a dining hall job.

5. The Career Center

Not only does it have an extensive website covering topics you did not even consider, but the Career Center also has many resources available to students in person, such as coaching. Whether you are a sophomore or are about to graduate, scheduling an appointment with the Career Center can help you figure out your next steps.

6. The Alumni Association

The Alumni Association can help you find connections for not only jobs, but also any other ventures where a little networking will go a long way. Your fellow Wolverines are always there to help!

7. Attend Events

There are so many career expos, workshops, and networking events happening at Michigan all the time. By attending several, you are bound to learn something, build your network, or find a job!

8. Join Clubs and Organizations

Definitely join something you will enjoy! Also, make sure to become a part of something that will further your career goals. Having something to put on your resume, with hopefully an executive position, will definitely look good to employers, plus all of the learning and experience benefits you will gain.

If you are willing to put yourself out there, you will find a vast amount of resources available for you to use and many people behind them who want to help you succeed. After all, we go to Michigan. Do not be afraid to use what has been given to you. Go Blue!
