November is nearly here and that means the winter study abroad term is around the corner. Rather than expressing my extreme jealousy, I guess I could offer some advice based on my own experience instead! Nobody really knows where they will travel on the weekends until arriving there and coordinating with new friends. Popular destinations such as Paris, London, and Berlin will likely make the short list. However, I went to a few cities that I had not previously considered but were easily my favorite trips. Here are a few ideas of new and different vacation spots you can try while abroad:
Interlaken, Switzerland
Hands down, the best trip I have ever been on in my life. Skiing in the Swiss Alps is magical. I spent an entire day above the clouds in air that sparkled. I can’t even put it entirely in words. Never in a million years did I plan to take such a trip (and the lack of “winter” clothing I packed was evidence of that!). I would 100% recommend this if you study abroad in the winter.
Nice, France
The French Riviera is gorgeous. The rock beaches, unique town, and fun nightlife made this trip unforgettable. I would recommend going for Carnival, a huge celebration throughout Europe before the Easter Lenten season (think of a celebration that mixes Halloween and Mardi Gras). Another option is to head there once the weather heats up and really appreciate the beaches and Mediterranean Sea.
Istanbul, Turkey
I went to Istanbul with my mom the last week I spent in Europe. If you crave a location full of culture and not quite like the rest of Europe I would try Istanbul. Personally, I was sold by the amazing Turkish food, but the city has so much to offer. Turkey is a long plane ride from the United States so why not take a 3-ish hour flight while in Europe?!
Capri, Italy
The entire Amalfi Coast is unreal and Capri is no exception. Capri is a tiny island off the coast of Sorrento. We enjoyed a boat tour around the island, took a single-person chair lift to the top of a mountain that overlooked the Italian coastline (my second time above the clouds!), ate amazing Caprese salads, and sipped Limoncello (Capri’s local product).Â

Here are two more locations I wished I could have made it to but just didn’t have the time. I heard amazing things about both. If you get there let me know about your experience!
San Sebastian, Spain
Located in the Northern tip of Spain in the Basque Country, this city boasts beautiful beaches, great food, and historical sites. Â My friend went here with his parents and said it was his favorite city he visited while abroad.Â
Marrakesh, Morocco
Who would not want to say they rode a camel while abroad? I wanted to go to Morocco so badly. I am actually a little devastated I never got there – a bunch of my friends traveled to Marrakesh or Casablanca and loved it. I had high hopes of getting henna on my hands, riding camels, and observing the culture. I can definitely say this will be a travel destination for me in the future and you should try it out too!
