Â
Her Campus:Â What brought you to U of M?
Kali Hengsteler: I actually grew-up an Ohio State fan because of my dad, but I soon realized Michigan was the perfect fit for me. I wanted a big sports school with a proud tradition both on and off the field. I also knew I wanted to continue playing hockey and earn a business degree. Michigan was everything I wanted in a school!
Â
HC: If you have one, what was your role on the team?
KH: Because we are a club program, the players run the team. We have a President, Vice President, and Treasurer. I served as Treasurer for my Sophomore and Junior years. I managed a $50,000 budget and dealt with financial affairs in regards to team travel, ice rental, etc. Then, as a senior this past season, I was elected Alternate Captain.Â
Â
HC: What was your favorite thing about being on the hockey team?Â
KH: My favorite thing about being on the team is the team itself. I’ve met so many great people through the program and have many memories to reflect on. Overall, this team has been a highlight of my college career, and I have many lifelong friends because of it!
Â
HC: What was the most difficult part about being a student-athlete?
KH: We are a competitive program, and we have a goal to compete for the National title every year. That being said, we dedicate a lot of time to the program. The hardest part is balancing between school, hockey and a social life. However, I’ve learned to effectively manage my time, which is a really important skill for the workplace.Â
Â
HC: Post-Grad Plans?Â
KH: I’m interested in sports marketing and sponsorship, particularly from the agency-side. Following graduation, I’m traveling to Europe during the month of May, but I will pick-up where I left off in terms of the job hunt once I’m home.Â
Â
HC: Favorite U of M Memory?
KH: First thing that comes to mind is the Michigan-Notre Dame football game Under the Lights my Freshman year. It was definitely an unforgettable experience!
