Transferring to a new university can be daunting, but luckily the University of Michigan realizes that and puts tremendous effort towards making sure their transfer students feel welcome and prepared to succeed. Here’s a list of resources for transfer students UMich offers.
The Changing Gears Program is UROP’s community for transfer students. It nearly guarantees students will find a research project and mentor for the entire year, with the possibility of credit or work study. Students learn academic and research skills in bi-weekly seminars to apply to their current research and future careers.

Transfer connections matches other transfer students with a peer advisor (who was once a transfer themselves) and staff advisor. Transfers regularly meet with their advisors’ other students to participate in fun activities and meet other transfers. The peer advisors also meet every month with each student to talk and offer any advice and make sure the transition is going smooth. In addition, there are large recreational and academic events held for all the students in Transfer Connections to gather and participate.

Emerging Wolverines uses the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) personality test to help individuals determine current and future pursuits. Students learn in small groups and partake in activities that help them find the best ways to get involved on campus and discover career paths that fit their own needs and aspirations.
While these programs are catered specifically to transfer students, there are many other broad resources available to better the chances of success during the transition.
