We did it, everyone. We powered through the first half of the semester and spring break is now in the foreseeable future. Sadly, not all of us will be headed somewhere tropical or even to a place where temperatures exceed freezing. Staying home for spring break can be a downer, but I’ve rounded up some tunes that will hopefully transcend you to a place where you don’t have to babysit your brother while you browse Facebook pictures of your friends hanging out on the beach. To everyone who is going somewhere over break, this playlist is not for you. You can make your “Aruba 2013!” playlist on your on time. Besides, who needs Aruba when you have your living room and an iHome?
I just made spring break at home sound even worse. Let me attempt to make up for it. Â
“Spring” – Two Door Cinema Club
I figured I should start this off with a song that clearly establishes the intent of this playlist. Strap in, people, I’m not messing around here.
BeyoncĂ©. This one needs no explanation.Â
“New Theory” – Washed Out
I’ve yet to hear a Washed Out song that didn’t put me in an extremely clichĂ© and sunshine-y mood. I don’t care if it’s 15 degrees outside, I will be driving my car over break with the windows rolled down while this song plays. Does this put me at risk for pneumonia? Yeah, probably. It’s a sacrifice that must be made.Â
M83’s latest album Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming is possibly my favorite album of all time, but I’ll give credit when it’s due. Saturdays = Youth is a great album in its own right, and probably even more suitable for the springtime. This song proves my point.Â
“Quiet Houses” – Fleet Foxes
Nothing feels like spring quite like listening to a bunch of bearded men who sound like they practice their harmonies while simultaneously working on their herb garden together. Now that’s spring.
“Still Sound” – Toro y Moi
Just hearing this song is enough to make you feel like you’ve been transported to the nearest beach.
If Toro y Moi didn’t work, this one should do it.Â
If your parents decide to make you their personal slave while you’re back at home, and have you driving all over creation, here’s another “drive around with the windows down” kind of song that’ll get you through it.Â
“Tonight I’m Getting Over You” – Carly Rae Jepsen
She has more songs than “Call Me Maybe” and they’re all really catchy. I’m not ashamed of this.Â
“Liquorice ” – Azealia Banks
For a productive use of time over break, I suggest polishing up your rap skills. This should be a good starting block.
“Mr. Blue Sky” – Electric Light Orchestra
When in doubt, turn to the classics. It’ll make your spring break at home seem refined and distinguished.Â
