As the weather gets colder, the leaves slowly fall off the trees, and November starts to slowly fade to December, we have to remember that before we can celebrate the wonderful season of snowflakes kissing decorated evergreen trees, we first have to gather around the table to devour a turkey that has been slowly roasting all day. And although Thanksgiving is largely about a roasted bird, it is also about remembering what we are thankful for.
This Thanksgiving season, I had the honor of getting to know Andrea Cruz from the University of Puerto Rico. Through numerous emails and days of communication, I have grown to learn about the amazing woman that Andrea is. She is currently going for her second bachelor’s degree in Journalism with already having one in Secondary Education, concentrating in history.
When I asked her what piqued her interest in writing for Her Campus, she said that a friend introduced the chapter to her and helped her apply. She expresses her extreme gratitude to her friend for the opportunity and says she has enjoyed her time in her chapter thus far even though the pandemic has prevented her from being able to participate in some of the virtual events because of other obligations. This caused her to be involved with the social media aspect of her chapter so that she can stay involved, continue to work amongst her friends and be creative.
As I continued to get to know Andrea, I started to ask her the most random questions from if she were to be an ice cream flavor, what would she be and why (which would be salted caramel because its a perfect balance between salty and sweet) to what her favorite song lyric was (which is tuck on the end of this ball and chain, and I’m on my way back down again. Stood on a bridge, tied to a noose, sick to the stomach. You can say what you mean, but it won’t change a thing. I’m sick of the secrets. Stood on the edge, tied to a noose, and you came along and you cut me loose” from the song Amsterdam by Coldplay).
I also learned that we share a common love for Harry Potter. If given the chance out of all the fictional places ever created, we both bonded over wanting to walk through Hogsmeade, watching the snow slowly cover to ground, or walking through Hogwarts (even if there are a million stairs to climb). Andrea was also quick to mention how cool it would be to ride a broomstick (which I think would be really cool as well) and use magic as well (and hopefully learn a spell besides wingardium leviosa).
As the Thanksgiving season comes to a close, remember to be thankful of all the new and old people you have in your life and all the small things that make the bonds special to you (even if it is Harry Potter).
