Recently, my TikTok ‘For You Page’ has been filled with content surrounding The Masters annual golf tournament. This widely known and praised invitational golf tournament, held in Augusta, Georgia, brings professional men’s golf fans together from across the country every spring season. The content that appears for me on this social media platform doesn’t quite focus on the golf itself—rather, the notoriously exclusive southern charm noteworthy at The Masters.

Before I dive into the recent TikTok trends, it’s important to understand the rich history and traditions of this high-class coveted event. The Masters was founded in 1934 by two men named Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts, who wanted to create a unique annual luxury and monumental golf tournament. Its uniqueness is because of its routine course in which it is held yearly, the Augusta National Golf Course. Unlike other tournaments that frequently change the terrain for competition, this tournament is played every year at the same course, alongside many other specific traditions. There are very few players selected to compete in this tournament, as it is an invitation-only event, making it more prestigious and exclusive. Additionally, the tradition of giving the winner a green jacket to signify winning the competition is handed down from the previous year’s winner.

All these traditions and rituals are what make The Masters so sacred to the fans of professional golf; however, an entirely less common demographic of fans has begun to be intrigued and posting about this year’s golf tournament: young women. While this demographic is typically less commonly tuning into a men’s golf tournament, The Masters seems to be different, as many trends surrounding the outfits and souvenirs from this tournament have arisen.

Scattered throughout my recent TikTok have been young adults, the majority of which are women, discussing their time at The Masters. More importantly, they discuss the souvenirs they have taken back with them after their visit. Based on the TikTok algorithm, I can assume that they are hauls from previous years, as this year’s actual tournament hasn’t started yet. However, I found these hauls to have little relevance to the golf itself and more to the chic charm that can be seen in the outfits worn and the level of southern charm seen. The colors and look of The Masters are very vibrant and spring-like, making it aesthetically inviting to those who may be watching as a patron.

Additionally, both women and men focus on the fashion for this event as formal and trendy golf athletic attire. While some may consider this “preppy”, I find this aesthetic chic and traditional, perfect for a golf tournament like The Masters. Many of the other trends I have noticed on my TikTok are “What we are wearing” videos where patrons show off their preppy, stylish, and classy outfits. These many aspects of this unique golf tournament make it appeal to such a wide and varied audience. Being someone who has played golf, I am interested both in the sport and the beautiful traditions that come with this chic and exclusive golf tournament!
