As the leaves begin to turn and the air gets crisp, summer’s fast-paced routine gradually gives way to a slower, more reflective rhythm. Though the academic year may be ramping up, autumn invites us to embrace the art of slowing down – a challenge for many busy college students. Embracing the cozy season isn’t just about warm drinks and new sweaters; it’s an opportunity to pause, reset, and reconnect with our mental well-being.Â
Here are a few things I’ve been doing this fall to take a step back from the stress and anxiety of it all:
- Read a book (not academically)
-
Picking up a book that has nothing to do with schoolwork or productivity can be a great way to escape from the busy world around us. Whether it’s a mystery novel, magazine article, or romance book, reading for fun allows our minds to relax and take a trip into a new world momentarily. I’ve recently replaced my usual before-bed phone time with reading and noticed a significant improvement in my ability to fall asleep and stay asleep. It’s a no-pressure activity that gives your brain a break from all the chaos of everyday life, allowing you to take some time to slow down and do something good for yourself.
- Spend time outside
-
Just because summer is over doesn’t mean our time outside has to end too. Spending time in the beautiful, crisp, fall weather is the perfect way to step back and reconnect with the world around us. My favorite activity is taking a walk but you could do something like exploring a nearby cider mill, or even doing your homework outside in the Diag. Either way, some fresh air will always make you feel better.
- Create a morning routine
-
Instead of rushing out of the door every morning, I’ve created a morning routine where I set aside a few extra minutes each day to help start my day off right. Giving myself time to enjoy my morning coffee, listen to music, take a walk, and fill out my planner for the day has made my mornings something I look forward to, rather than dread. Find the things that make the start of your day better, and implement them to create a stronger foundation for your busy day ahead.
- Bake or cook comfort foods
-
I can’t name a better season than fall to embrace cozy and delicious recipes. Take some time away from work or school to make your favorite comfort dishes – it could be warm soup, seasonal baked goods, or just your favorite food. Cooking or baking is the perfect relaxing and creative outlet, giving you a break from the daily hustle and leaving you with a tasty treat in the end. I recently made some pumpkin chocolate chip banana bread and…I could not recommend it enough, it’s the perfect fall sweet treat.
- spend a night in
-
Sometimes, skipping a night out and planning a relaxing night is the perfect way to take some time for yourself. Put on your favorite pajamas, grab your favorite snacks, do a face mask, and settle in for a movie marathon or binge-watch that TV show you’ve been wanting to get into. To elevate this night, add some hot tea or maybe even a good book to make the night even more relaxing. Taking a night to ourselves allows us to recharge without any distractions.
By incorporating a few of these ideas into your daily routines, you can enjoy the fall season while also taking care of your mental health and well-being. I hope this helps, and have a great fall season, everyone!
