As someone with 4C hair, I find that winter can be an incredibly frustrating time for me and my hair. The winter air has a way of soaking up every bit of moisture from my high-porosity hair. Iām constantly looking for oils and products that will keep my hair moisturized during the winter and hereās what Iāve found works best for me! The best thing about these products is they work well on all hair types, but your method of application might differ depending on your hair type and porosity.Ā
Argan oil
This first product is tried and true. Iāve been using Argan oil to moisturize my scalp forever and it hasnāt failed me yet! I use pure argan oil on my scalp and the ends of my hair 4-5 times a week or as needed. My favourite brand is Ultimate Originals Therapy Argan Oil ($7.99) because the bottle has a spout which helps for easy application. If you buy one thing off this list, make it this product.
Mielle rosemary mint hair oil
If youāve been on TikTok in the last month, no doubt youāve heard about the Mielle Rosemary Mint Hair Oil ($9.99) and its āmagicalā properties for hair growth. In her end-of-year āAmazon Findsā video, the rising TikTok influencer Alix Earle included the oil and described her tremendous hair growth after only a couple of weeks of using it. Iām here to say that Iāve been using this product for years and sheās incredibly right. It’s made with peppermint, rosemary, and tea tree oil and it has all the nourishing properties that are perfect for this season!
castor oil
Last but certainly not least is castor oil. This is another oil that has a nearly flawless reputation in my book! The oil itself is very thick, so I would recommend using it less often than the ones listed above. Donāt be afraid to mix it with argan oil or another favourite product for easier application! My favourite brand is Jamaican Black Castor Oil by Jamaican Mango & Lime ($8.99). Castor oil does wonders for my scalp over the winter months.
All of these oils and more can be found in multiple hair stores across the city. I recommend Crowned on Rideau Street or Miami Beauty Supply in Billings Bridge Plaza. As for the Mielle oil, its popularity on TikTok has made it hard to come by, but itās available on Amazon Prime for around $20-$25. These oils have worked wonders for my hair over the years, especially during this season, and I hope they work for you!
