All Our Style Withdrawals from Michelle Obama: A Style Timeline

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Ottawa chapter.

With a new presidential couple for us in store, we really can’t help but look back and reminisce on some of the finer moments our ex-FLOTUS had shared with us. Despite our Obama blues, we’ve actually been blessed with double the year’s worth of fashion inspiration to last us the next four! Here’s one last look at Michelle Obama slaying in her most fashionable moments with a timeline of her evolutionary wardrobe over the years!

Michelle Obama in Jason Wu, Inauguration of Donald Trump 2017

In one of the couple’s final official appearances, Michelle shines by keeping it simple and classy in a calf-length dress by Jason Wu as she joins her husband in attendance at the 2017 inauguration.

Michelle Obama in Versace Atelier, White House State Dinner 2016

Can we say State Dinner goals?! Just looking at the way Michelle flawlessly rocked this floor-length dress make by Versace Atelier, which has us wishing we were chilling around the dinner table too (along with the fact we’d be dining with the Obamas too of course). #StateDinnerGoals

Michelle Obama in Vera Wang, China State Dinner 2015

There’s only one thing that has us gushing more than the way the Obamas perfected this China State Dinner, and that’s Michelle’s stunning Trumpet style floor-length by Vera Wang. If you’re low-key wishing you could redo your entire prom after seeing this one, you’re not alone!

Michelle Obama in Carolina Herrera, State Dinner for the President of France 2014

This elegant collaboration of lace and soft blue, designed by Carolina Herrera and inspired by French Haute Couture, has us inspired to hop on the next plane back to Paris! Get in, President Hollande, we’re going shopping.

Michelle Obama in Marchesa, Kennedy Center Honors 2013

While we were still figuring out if patterned leggings should be a thing (2013 was a trial period; all of it), Michelle enchanted the Kennedy Center Honors in a breathtaking Marchesa, inspired by the Grecian-style of flowing layers and emerald green satin.

And of course, only Michelle can compete with Michelle at KCH annuals, with her jaw-dropping gold and studded Marchesa gown from the year before proving just that. Judging by where Obama’s eyes are wandering, he definitely agrees!

Michelle Obama in Tom Ford, London State Dinner 2011

When you have a designer like Tom Ford, who declines to dress just any FLOTUS, you can see why he’s made some exceptions for Michelle. Even though she was meeting the real Queen, she slayed like a Queen herself in an ivory, crossed-top gown at the London State Dinner in 2011.

Michelle Obama in Peter Soronen, State Dinner 2010

Although I personally have removed all pre-straightener days from my memory, anytime we think back to 2010, we get in our diva feels, inspired by thick belts and shimmery clothing. Despite how horrific that may seem now, we can still look back at Michelle in her custom made Peter Soronen shimmery-blue gown and silver-studded belt without feeling like 2010 has to be totally off the radar.

Michelle Obama in Jason Wu, Inauguration Ball 2009

And last on this list, but first to win our hearts, is a young Michelle Obama in a white Jason Wu one-shoulder gown that was as bright as her career as First Lady of the United States.

Even though we’ll miss all of her cute dancing and good mom-advice, America (and the rest of the world) was definitely most blessed to have a fashionista like Michelle Obama in the oval office! Bring out the mom jeans Michelle, you deserve it!
